Choosing the Best Unlimited Data Plan

If you’re shopping for an unlimited data plan, you may be surprised by how many options are available. Unfortunately, not all unlimited plans offer the same features for the same price. So it’s important to know what your priorities are when it comes to an unlimited cell phone plan.

Cheap unlimited plans available from prepaid carriers and MVNOs (including Mint Mobile, Boost Mobile and Visible) offer limited high-speed data. This means data will slow based on congestion. Still, they do provide unlimited data with some of the lowest prices you’ll find. Unlimited plans from major carriers come with slightly higher prices but offer much more high-speed data or unlimited data with no speed restrictions at all.

In addition to the amount of high-speed data, unlimited plans differ in the features they offer. If you’re looking for an unlimited hotspot plan, prepaid plan or HD video streaming, be sure to read the fine print before you choose a plan to ensure you get the features you want.

Below, you’ll find my top picks for the best unlimited data plans:

Cheapest Unlimited Data Plans

While you may need unlimited data, the overall price is still a factor to consider. Many MVNOs that run on the towers of major networks offer unlimited data plans for a fraction of the cost of the major carriers. For example, Visible offers unlimited data with reduced speeds during congestion on Verizon Wireless’ network. US Mobile offers a cheap unlimited annual plan with 10GB of premium data followed by reduced speeds for the remainder of the month for $210 ($17.50/month).

If you’re simply looking for the best cheap phone plan that doesn’t charge for data overages, these are great options to consider:

  • Cheapest Unlimited Data Plan & Cheapest Unlimited Hotspot Plan: Visible
  • Cheapest Unlimited Annual Plan: US Mobile

While Visible & US Mobile earned the top superlatives for cheapest unlimited data plans, I’ve also included a list of other cheap unlimited data plans to consider from all three major networks.

Visible

Cheapest Unlimited Data Plan Overall & Cheapest Unlimited Hotspot Plan

If you’re looking for the cheapest unlimited data plan, it’s hard to beat Visible. For $25 per month, you can get unlimited talk, text and data with no data cap. Still, speeds may be reduced during congestion. The plan also includes unlimited mobile hotspot data, but speeds are capped at 5 Mbps and it’s limited to one device. Visible’s basic plan does include unlimited mobile data, and you can expect download speeds between 9-149 Mbps. If you need faster data or hotspot, you can opt for Visible+. The $45 per month plan includes 50GB of premium high-speed data and access to Verizon’s 5G Ultra Wideband network. Plus, mobile hotspot speeds are twice as fast.

To save even more, you may be able to bring your own phone to Visible. Check your phone’s compatibility online before switching. I tried out Visible myself before recommending the carrier, and you can read my full review here to learn more about Visible.

    US Mobile

    Cheapest Unlimited Annual Plan

If you’re willing to commit to a phone plan for a full year, US Mobile’s Unlimited Flex is one of the cheapest overall unlimited options. US Mobile lets you choose between T-Mobile and Verizon’s network with AT&T’s network coming as an option later this year.

The plan costs $210 upfront for a full year of service, which works out to $17.50 per month with taxes and fees included. For that price, you’ll get unlimited calls, texts and data. The plan includes 10GB of premium data per month and unlimited data at slower speeds after 10GB. The plan also includes 5GB of mobile hotspot.

US Mobile also offers monthly unlimited plans beginning at $25 for 35GB of high-speed data and 10GB of mobile hotspot data. The same plan costs as low as $22.50 per month when you prepay for a year ($270 upfront).

Before you switch to US Mobile, be sure to read my full review. Also, I always recommend trying any new carrier for at least a month before purchasing a full-year plan.

More Cheap Unlimited Data Plans to Consider

In addition to Visible or US Mobile, several other carriers offer a similar deal. For more options, consider an unlimited plan from one of these carriers:

    • Mint Unlimited (Review) offers unlimited talk, text and data for $30 monthly plus taxes and fees. The plan also includes an additional 10GB of mobile hotspot data. Data speeds reduce after 40GB, but you can still continue using unlimited data. Note that you’ll have to prepay for three months in advance with Mint Mobile, bringing the price to $90 upfront. For a limited time, new customers can sign up for any Mint Mobile plan for $15/month.
    • Tello Mobile (Review) offers one of the best cheap phone plans with 1GB of high-speed data and unlimited minutes for $9/month. Additionally, you’ll find a great unlimited plan with 35GB of high-speed data and unlimited minutes for $25/month.
    • Boost Mobile (Review) offers an unlimited plan for $25 with 30GB of high-speed data before deprioritization. This plan runs on Boost Mobile’s own 5G network with access to AT&T and T-Mobile’s networks as well.
    • T-Mobile Essentials Saver (Review) offers unlimited mobile hotspot data at 3G speeds for only $50 per month. The plan also includes unlimited mobile hotspot at 3G speeds.
    • AT&T Prepaid (Review) offers an annual unlimited plan for $300 ($25/month) that includes unlimited talk, text and data (speeds will reduce after 16GB/month). The plan also includes 10GB of hotspot data per month. Monthly unlimited plans begin at $40/month with autopay from AT&T Prepaid.
    • Verizon Prepaid (Review) offers unlimited monthly plans beginning at $50/month with autopay. This plan includes unlimited talk, text and data that may slow when the network is congested. This plan also includes 5GB of mobile hotspot.

Best Unlimited Data Plans From Major Carriers

If you need high-speed data that’s truly unlimited (or a phone plan with a much higher data cap) consider a plan from a major carrier. T-Mobile’s Essentials plan is eligible for several discounts (including the Essentials Saver plan, Essentials 4-Line Offer and a special rate for seniors). The plan includes unlimited talk, text and data plus 50GB of premium data and unlimited 3G mobile hotspot. AT&T’s Unlimited Premium plan offers high-speed data that never slows plus 60GB of high-speed mobile hotspot data. On Verizon’s network, the Unlimited Ultimate plan is available for $90.

    Team Clark’s Methodology

For the purposes of this review, Team Clark determined that the top priorities for unlimited cell phone plans are:

    • Price
    • Network reliability
    • Network coverage
    • Monthly data allotments
    • “Bring your own device” availability
    • Deals and discounts (loyalty, autopay, additional lines, etc.)
    • Online reviews from real customers

Various members of our staff tried out each of these popular cell phone providers to get a feel for their reliability and service. We have linked to Clark.com’s individual reviews of those providers.

    Final Thoughts

When it comes to choosing the best unlimited data plan, it’s important to know what features and perks you need other than a lot of data. You can find cheap unlimited plans from MVNOs that run on major networks’ towers as well as completely unlimited plans directly from one of the major networks. If you need a high allotment of mobile hotspot data or HD video streaming, be sure to choose an unlimited plan with these features.

If you are looking for the cheapest price on unlimited data with a prepaid provider, Visible is available for $25 per month with unlimited data. For a truly unlimited data plan with hotspot and HD video streaming, AT&T’s Unlimited Premium plan is hard to beat at $85.99 per month for one line.
