Guilherme Baumgarten, a doctoral student at FHNW School of Life Sciences, Institute for Medical Engineering and Medical Informatics and at the iCube laboratory at the Universität Straßburg, defended on Wednesday his doctoral thesis entitled “Development and characterization of an NMR portable probe for the monitoring of water quality and for the study of the kinetics of chemical reactions”. The thesis was directed by Morgan Madec (iCube) and co-supervised by Luc Hebrard (iCube) and Joris Pascal (Hochschule für Life Sciences FHNW). Guilherme Baumgarten answered numerous questions, demonstrating his in-depth knowledge of a wide-ranging subject. He was able to provide pertinent answers to questions concerning both electronic devices and NMR techniques. At the end of the defense and after admission, Guilherme took an oath of scientific integrity in the tradition of the doctoral school. Seit Frühling 2024 sind Andrea Dönni und Pravin Ganesanandamoorthy, Studierende in Umwelttechnologie, in Tadschikistan, wo sie an ihrer Bachelor-, bzw. Masterarbeit arbeiten (wir haben darüber berichtet am 28.3. und am 5.4.2024). Inzwischen haben sich beide gut in die gastfreundliche Kultur des Landes eingelebt. Die Offenheit und Herzlichkeit der Menschen haben es ihnen leicht gemacht, sich in die Gesellschaft zu integrieren. Die Kommunikation mit den Einheimischen funktioniert meist durch Google Translator oder mit einem Mix aus gebrochenem Englisch, Russisch, vielen Handzeichen und einer großen Portion Geduld. Ihr Tad-schikisch steckt noch in den Kinderschuhen, aber sie lernen täglich dazu. «Das Arbeitstempo in Tadschikistan ist gemütlicher als in der Schweiz», bemerkt Andrea. Trotzdem erfordert es von den beiden eine hohe Flexibilität und die Fähigkeit, sich schnell an neue Situationen anzupassen. „Hier muss man viel mehr den Erfindergeist ausleben“, fügt Pravin an, „nicht alles ist so-fort und überall erhältlich wie in der Schweiz.“ „Meine Zeit in Tadschikistan neigt sich langsam dem Ende zu. Ich bin stark damit beschäftigt, die letz-ten Analysen durchzuführen und meine To-do-Liste abzuarbeiten», erzählt Andrea. Auch Pravin arbeitet mit vollem Einsatz an seiner Masterarbeit. „Nach einem langsamen Start und eini-gen Vorbereitungen kann ich nun mit meiner Hauptarbeit beginnen. Ich freue mich sehr darauf und bin gespannt auf die Ergebnisse», so Pravin. Kürzlich hatten die beiden Besuch von Dr. Maryna Peter, Dozentin an der Hochschule für Life Sciences FHNW, welche die Studierenden betreut und unterstützt. The UR3E from Universal Robots has been installed on a platform to allow flexible movement of the robotic arm within the laboratories of the Institute of Chemistry and Bioanalytics. The programming and application of the system are part of the Laboratory Automation and Digitalisation lecture and also serve as a model for chemical engineering lectures. In addition, the robot will be used by students during practical courses to demonstrate the automation of various processes within instrumental analytics, such as automated weighing, reaction monitoring, sample drawing in organic chemistry, and feeding 96-well plates into bioanalytical systems. Abbas Mshinda, Founder of LabX Technologies, visits the School of Life Sciences FHNW for an Internship in Titanium Printing. He aims to revolutionise medical technology. His startup, LabX Technologies, focuses on developing customised 3D-printed implants designed to improve patients' quality of life. The challenge Abbas faces is the necessity of creating implants that are not only functional and durable but also patient-specific. Traditional manufacturing methods reach their limits when it comes to providing complex anatomical shapes that meet the stringent demands of modern medicine. This is where the School of Life Sciences FHNW (HLS) comes into play. As a mentor and partner, HLS supports Abbas on his journey by providing access to cutting-edge titanium 3D printing technology and valuable expertise. During his internship at our Institute for Medical Engineering and Medical Informatics, Abbas works closely with leading experts to acquire practical skills and in-depth technical knowledge. This collaboration enables him to push the boundaries of what is possible in medical technology. With the support of HLS, Abbas Mshinda will be able to integrate titanium printing technology into his startup, significantly enhancing LabX Technologies' product range. The new implants are not only stronger and more biocompatible but also lighter and more sustainable. These advances lead to better patient outcomes while contributing to a more environmentally friendly medical technology. The experiences Abbas Mshinda gains at HLS are a crucial milestone in his journey as an innovator and entrepreneur. The knowledge and skills acquired will help LabX Technologies transform healthcare and bring about positive changes worldwide.
