𝗪𝗔𝗖𝗞𝗘𝗥 𝗢𝗽𝗲𝗻𝘀 #𝗺𝗥𝗡𝗔 𝗖𝗼𝗺𝗽𝗲𝘁𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝗖𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗿 𝗶𝗻 #𝗛𝗮𝗹𝗹𝗲 𝗮𝗻 𝗱𝗲𝗿 𝗦𝗮𝗮𝗹𝗲, 𝗚𝗲𝗿𝗺𝗮𝗻𝘆: WACKER has reached a milestone by opening an mRNA competence center at its biotech site in Halle (Saale), Germany. The new facility enables the large-scale production of active ingredients based on messenger ribonucleic acid (mRNA), such as anti-Covid mRNA vaccines. WACKER invested more than 100 million euros in this construction project. More than 100 highly qualified jobs have already been created in Halle. Some of the new capacity will be made available to the German government as part of its pandemic-preparedness plan in order to rapidly supply Germany with vaccines as and when required. With 300 guests from politics and business, as well as employees in attendance, WACKER celebrated the opening of its new mRNA competence center, a key project for the Group’s future. During the Covid pandemic, mRNA-based actives saved millions of lives – an experience that has underlined the importance of being prepared for these kinds of future challenges. Expansion of WACKER’s Halle site into an mRNA competence center enables the company to produce mRNA actives on a large scale going forward. Four new production lines have more than trebled the site’s capacity, some of which will be available to the German government as part of its pandemic-preparedness program. The remaining production capacity is for other customers. The first contracts in this regard have already been signed. Evonik opens new biosurfactant plant in Slovakia A global leader in specialty #chemicals, has inaugurated a new biosurfactant plant in Slovenská Ľupča, central #Slovakia. This facility will create about 100 new jobs, adding to the 250 current employees in the town. 📍 Innovative production Surfactants, common in products like cleaning agents and shower gels, are typically derived from petroleum. However, Evonik’s new plant is the first to produce rhamnolipid biosurfactants at an industrial scale. These biosurfactants, made from renewable corn feedstocks through a biotechnological process, are non-toxic and biodegradable. 📍 Growing demand Evonik reports increasing demand for rhamnolipids as a sustainable alternative to fossil-based or tropical oil-derived surfactants. They have significant potential in personal care, cleaning, coatings, and agriculture. Unilever, known in Slovakia for products like #Domestos, #Cif, and #Savo, will be a key customer. 📍 Future expansion Evonik Fermas plans to expand its Slovenská Ľupča portfolio to include proteins for the textile and chemical industries, replacing animal-sourced proteins. Last year, they began producing new amino acids for the chemical and pharmaceutical sectors. 📍 Global presence Evonik operates in over 100 countries, achieving €15.3 billion in sales and €1.66 billion in operating profit in 2023. They began their Slovak operations in 1993, producing amino acids for livestock feed, marking the largest foreign investment in Slovakia at that time. Six years later, Evonik took full ownership of the venture. +++ 𝙱𝚒𝚘𝚌𝚒𝚍𝚊𝚕 𝚄𝚙𝚍𝚊𝚝𝚎 +++ Despite the ECHA's need to extend the deadline for its Review Programme under the Biocidal Product Regulation (#BPR), significant progress is being made by the #ECHA and its Competent Authorities in evaluating antimicrobial technologies that were available on the market prior to 2012. Up to date, almost every other antimicrobial technology for which the review has already been done, will be banned from the market: ➡ 573 out of 938 active substance-product type records have been reviewed ➡ Only 300 of them have been approved! In the case of the antimicrobial technologies based on the release of silver ions, the current situation is even more dramatic: ➡ 38 out of 72 active substance-product type records have been reviewed ➡ 𝗡𝗢𝗡𝗘 of them have been approved! ⛔ Even though available today, these technologies will be banned from the market! 👉 𝗧𝗵𝗲𝗿𝗲 𝗶𝘀 𝗮 𝗻𝗲𝗲𝗱 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗻𝗲𝘄 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗶𝗻𝗻𝗼𝘃𝗮𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲 #antimicrobial 𝘀𝗼𝗹𝘂𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀!

🗞️👉Publication Note 💥 🌐With the involvement of experts from Swissmedic, an international working group of representatives of regulatory authorities compiled data and principles that led to the development of a model for the risk assessment of nitrosamines based on chemical structural characteristics. This was published in a scientific journal. 🔍The article describes the principles of the Carcinogenic Potency Categorisation Approach (CPCA) published at the end of 2023. The method makes it possible to standardise the definition of acceptable intakes (AI) for medicinal products, including complex chemical nitrosamine impurities, specifically nitrosamine drug substance-related impurities" (NDSRI). This speeds up safety assessments of nitrosamine impurities. 📝The open-access scientific publication also uses sample molecules to illustrate how the CPCA is used to determine acceptable intakes for nitrosamine impurities. This allows industry and manufacturing experts in particular to understand the classification into different risk classes. 💡Not least, understanding the method enables constructive participation in its further development. In conjunction with other measures, the approach should also help to reduce or avoid animal experiments to assess the carcinogenic potential of nitrosamine impurities.
