thyssenkrupp Marine Systems makes significant progress on its road to independence in the 2nd quarter of 2023/24: Marine Systems increased order intake to €140 million (prior year: €135 million) and sales to €532 million (prior year: €497 million). The sales trend remained stable due to positive project progress in the surface vessels and submarine businesses. This was also reflected in the adjusted EBIT of €25 million, which was significantly higher than the prior-year figure of €14 million. Progress has also been made with the planned spin-off of the marine business. thyssenkrupp and investment company The Carlyle Group have agreed to start due diligence in respect of the marine business of thyssenkrupp. The subject of this assessment is the possible partial sale of thyssenkrupp Marine Systems to Carlyle. Other options for a stock market listing are still being explored in parallel. At the same time, discussions are being held with the German federal government regarding a possible investment in the marine business of thyssenkrupp.

Fuel cell maker Blue World Technologies has completed testing of the world’s first 200 kW high-temperature PEM fuel cell module. The test was completed at the newly established test facilities in Aalborg, where the fuel cells for the system are produced. According to the company, the initial testing has exceeded performance expectations. With an electrical efficiency of up to 55% when reaching a commercial stage, the fuel cell system will typically provide a fuel saving of 20-30% enabling a cost-efficient use of green fuels. The system also allows up to 100% carbon capture for utilisation in green fuel production and storage. The system, based on high-temperature PEM fuel cell technology, provides high-grade waste heat of 150°C and when powered by renewable methanol, the system has a net zero operation. “During the test period, we successfully validated our system setup with the methanol fuel processor, the series connection of the fuel cell stacks, as well as the balance of plant components surrounding the fuel cells”, said Dennis Naldal Jensen, CTO at Blue World Technologies. The first pilot system will be a 1MW system for onboard power production. The system will be installed on one of A.P. Moller-Maersk’s large dual fuel-enabled methanol vessels and the installation on board is expected during the first half of 2026. The order for the pilot system was followed by an $11.8m investment by Maersk Growth, the venture arm of A.P. Moller-Maersk, at the end of 2023 alongside The Export and Investment Fund of Denmark, Cycle Group, and other new and existing shareholders. “The maritime industry needs multiple new technologies and pathways to reach its net-zero targets, and high-temperature PEM fuel cell technology is very promising in finding a balance between high electrical efficiency, size, and load adjustment. This is a great example of how we can support innovation through both investment and partnership”, added Alex Smout, investment director at Maersk Growth. Blue World will initially supply systems for auxiliary power and expects that its maritime system will reach a commercial level in 2027. Eventually, the company will proceed to supply multi-megawatt propulsion systems for global shipping.

Haffner Energy timely trip to the UK as UK Government publishes SAF mandate policy. Haffner Energy CEO Philippe Haffner and myself will be in the UK week of 12 May for SAF events. First the RBC SAF Symposium where I will be speaking on the panel "SAF Supply: Critical Production Pathways and how to make them Fly", and then the Sustainable Skies World Summit 15-16 May. This is a great opportunity for us to showcase our SAF production technology and meet our partners. I applaud the new British mandate. SAF will make up 2% of total UK jet fuel demand in 2025, and then increase to 10% in 2030 and then to 22% in 2040. From 2040, the obligation will remain at 22% until there is greater certainty regarding SAF supply, the transport ministry said in a statement. Limited obligations on Power to Liquid pathways are introduced (0,2% in 2028 and 3,5% in 2040) and HEFA pathway is caped from 2030, due to the limitation of feedstocks for this technology. It also aims to create space for more advanced fuels and SAF pathways. Our public affairs director Vincent QUÉAU summarized this in a few slides which we will share if you ask nicely 😉 . Happy to go Haffner Energy 's technology is ideally positioned to address the European SAF mandates as its technology is flexible and agnostic to the type of biomass used. #saf #cleanfuels Francisco da Silva Passos Laure BOURDON Stephane Thion Aaron Robinson Antoine Laborde Margaux Thoyer-Rozat Elise Roc Philippe Rodriguez Francois De Rugy Frédéric ROSSI Tuong-Vi AN-GOURFINKEL Jeoffrey Santaner Eduardo Famini Silva, CFA, MBA Marie-Albane PRIEUR Aurélie MESNIL Francesca Cox Francesca Ecsery Feras Al-Kayid

Argus’s Hydrogen and Future Fuels editor- Stefan Krümpelmann provides some insights in this FT article: 🔐 𝗔𝗿𝗴𝘂𝘀 𝗶𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗻𝗲𝘄𝘀 | 𝗖𝗿𝗮𝗰𝗸𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗴𝗿𝗲𝗲𝗻 𝗵𝘆𝗱𝗿𝗼𝗴𝗲𝗻’𝘀 𝗰𝗵𝗶𝗰𝗸𝗲𝗻 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗲𝗴𝗴 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗯𝗹𝗲𝗺 | Financial Times Funding is needed for projects demonstrating viability in order to fuel demand Excerpts from Lukanyo Mnyanda's article: --- Sourcing cheap components from China, a leader in the development of clean hydrogen, could help with the cost but it remains problematic due to geopolitical tensions. Western governments have instead sought to develop local supply chains and reduce reliance on a country they view as a competitor. Even so, the cost of producing green hydrogen is still about $5 per kilogramme higher than for grey hydrogen, making it three times more expensive to produce — according to data company Argus Media. “If renewable hydrogen is to kick off in earnest, this cost gap would need to be reduced, which will not be easy and requires a combination of scaling effects, efficiency gains and government subsidies,” says Stefan Krümpelmann, global head of hydrogen pricing at Argus. He points out that, while the number of electrolyser factories planned for construction has increased, not all planned projects will reach completion and “production could be hampered by bottlenecks for individual components”. --- Read in full: https://okt.to/nvBGad #ArgusMedia #FinancialTimes #FT #hydrogenpower #greenhydrogen #naturalgas #electricity

Wärtsilä secures China’s largest-ever methanol newbuild order Technology group Wärtsilä will supply the methanol-fuelled auxiliary engines for five new container vessels for COSCO Shipping Lines Co., Ltd and seven new container vessels for Orient Overseas Container Line. Each vessel will operate with three 8-cylinder and two 6-cylinder Wärtsilä 32M engines. This is the Chinese maritime sector’s largest order to date for methanol-fuelled newbuild vessels. The order was booked by Wärtsilä in December 2023. To complement the solution, the ships will be equipped with the Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) exhaust cleaning systems and alternators. These will be supplied through Wärtsilä’s joint venture company, CWEC (Shanghai) Company Ltd. (‘CWEC’). The Wärtsilä 32M methanol-fuelled engine has received type approval certificates from several classification societies around the world. Studies have shown that using methanol instead of heavy fuel oil can cut CO₂ and other GHG emissions. In particular, green methanol derived from renewable sources could achieve a further reduction in carbon footprint and thus becomes one of the central decarbonisation solutions for carriers in the future. https://bit.ly/3UgqLS5 #methanol #sustainable #marine #maritime #efuel #futurefuel #energytransition #renewable #alternativefuel

New fuel-flexible gensets look to quench methanol thirst A first mover in methanol large-bore engine technology, MAN ES is expanding its portfolio of small-bore, methanol dual-fuel gensets, offering wider choices for newbuilds With service lives of 20 years or more, newbuilds will have to be prepared to burn today’s fossil fuels and tomorrow’s low- and zero-carbon alternatives, as shipowners strive for a net-zero future. Increasingly, shipowners are specifying fuel-flexible prime movers and gensets to ensure their newbuilds are prepared for the energy transition. Roughly 50% of the gross tonnage (GT) on order, and about 55% of the GT contracted in the first two months of 2024, was alternative-fuel capable — some 115 ships of 6.8M GT — reports Clarksons Research. Among these newbuilds, 25 ships were ordered with methanol dual-fuel propulsion. Engine makers are answering the bell, rolling out a widening portfolio of dual-fuel engines. One is Danish engine designer MAN Energy Solutions (MAN ES), which was a first mover in two-stroke, large-bore methanol dual-fuel engine technology. It continues to expand its offerings for small-bore, dual-fuel gensets. It has secured orders for three of its new methanol dual-fuel MAN 6L21/31DF-M gensets for a newbuild chemical tanker. https://bit.ly/4dgg4Yi #methanol #sustainable #marine #maritime #efuel #futurefuel #energytransition #renewable #alternativefuel

H2Carrier plans Power-to-X production of hydrogen and ammonia in Norway [ Offshore Energy ] Norwegian company H2Carrier AS has applied to the Norwegian Water Resources and Energy Directorate (NVE) for the development of two large onshore wind farms in Finnmark County to produce green hydrogen and ammonia. The first wind farm, Oksefjorden, will be located at the Skjøtnigberg/Nordkyn peninsula in the municipalities of Lebesby and Gamvik, while the second wind farm, Rubbedalshøgda, will be based at the Varanger peninsula in the municipalities of Båtsfjord and Berlevåg. H2 Carrier said that the plans have been developed in cooperation with the host municipalities who already have been formally notified about the company’s intention to start the planning work. The two wind farms have a planned installed capacity of 1,55 GW with an estimated annual production of 6356 GWh. The estimated annual production volume of green hydrogen and ammonia is 109,000 and 610,000 tons, respectively. In combination, the two projects will contribute to 3.9% of Norway’s targeted reduction of CO2 emissions until 2030, H2Carrier claimed. The company also noted that it will use renewable power produced onshore for its floating production facilities installed on a ship which will be moored near shore, thus avoiding the environmental footprint normally associated with conventional onshore production of hydrogen/ammonia. Renewable power will be refined locally in the host communities, and according to H2Carrier, will have a “significant” impact on local and regional value creation by way of employment opportunities, improved public revenues and will offer a range of opportunities to regionally based companies.
