Billions of people are wilting under increasingly severe heatwaves driven largely by a fossil-fuel charged, human-induced #ClimateCrisis. United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres' “Call to Action on Extreme Heat” demands urgent and concerted efforts to enhance international cooperation to address extreme heat in four critical areas: Caring for the vulnerable, protecting workers, boosting resilience of economies and societies using data and science, and limiting temperature rise to 1.5°C by phasing out fossil fuels and scaling up investment in renewable energy. Trees are some of the planet’s most important carbon warehouses, absorbing this element from the air through the process of photosynthesis and storing it in their leaves, roots, and trunks. However, deforestation poses a threat, exposing the world to more greenhouse emissions. When trees decay or are burned, they release stored carbon into the atmosphere as carbon dioxide, a compound that helps raise the planet’s temperature, propelling climate change. At the same time, the loss of trees means forests can no longer absorb as much carbon from the air as before. Discover why protecting forests and trees is beneficial to the planet. https://lnkd.in/dtms9cSC

Global agriculture production has tripled in a span of 50 years, an expansion that has helped the world fight hunger and poverty. Nonetheless, the increased demand for agricultural products and an increase in population have led to the destruction of biodiversity, land degradation, and the extinction of species. As nations move to implement the Biodiversity Plan, a 2022 global agreement to safeguard the natural world, non-profit groups and farmers around the world are already working to make agriculture more planet-friendly. Here is a look at five ways they are helping people and the planet: https://lnkd.in/d-FxJTfd
