It is clear that our economic systems are failing the vast majority of the world. They are pushing millions into poverty. Ruinous debt levels, austerity measures, and inadequate fiscal space impede countries from delivering basic human rights. People and their human rights must be at the centre of economic policymaking, with development benefits shared fairly. We must empower women and girls, and transform care and support systems. To leave no one behind, we need to build a human rights economy. The High-Level Political Forum #HLPF is underway at UN Headquarters in New York to track the world’s progress on the #GlobalGoals and discuss ways to accelerate progress. The discussions today focus on Sustainable Development Goals 1 and 2 – End Poverty & End Hunger. Sobering statistics show we are losing ground; past gains are being reversed. #Ukraine: Yesterday’s massive missile attacks, including the horrifying strike on a children’s hospital, lay bare the disastrous consequences of the war waged by Russia. The pursuit of war – the practice of escalation - cannot become the new normal. ➡️ https://lnkd.in/e2GjBtx9

In today's world, where considerable information on human rights violations is found online amidst rampant mis- and dis-information, the UN Human Rights / Berkeley Protocol provides a standardized methodology for online investigations, including collecting, using and preserving digital evidence. It focuses on rigorous verification processes to ensure the authenticity and reliability of information, which is crucial for the effective investigation of human rights violations and prosecution for related crimes. By setting international standards for data collection, verification, and preservation, the protocol supports investigators and judicial mechanisms in holding perpetrators accountable and establishing a solid basis for truth and justice. At the Council of Europe, I addressed the alarming rise in antisemitic and anti-Muslim incidents happening globally, including in Europe, where antisemitism has a horrific history – pogroms and the Holocaust. Everywhere, hatred is being spewed at migrants, refugees and minorities, as well as the LGBTIQ+ community – often amplified online. Some leaders and political figures are scapegoating minorities, including in the context of elections, to distract from the real problems that need to be addressed. People of African descent continue to be trapped in systemic racism, fuelled by the remnants of colonialism and enslavement. These are important alarm bells, that must be heeded. We know from the past that hate speech and attitudes that dehumanize the other are omens of worse to come. The proverbial canary in the coalmine. History, of course, has important lessons for us more broadly. But also important legacies we are yet to overcome. Addressing these ongoing injustices will only work if a profound reckoning with the past takes place. If we finally deal with the shadow side of our past. We must meaningfully deal with past wrongs, by looking at them in a lucid way. Understanding the root causes. Remedying the consequences to the extent still possible. And taking measures to prevent recurrence. We must urgently counter hate speech, by detecting and preventing it from spreading. We must comprehensively end racism once & for all. Most importantly, we must improve the way we interact with each other & ensure that public discourse reflects the fundamental truth of human dignity and equality of all human beings.

June is about #Pride - pride in ourselves & in the strides we have made to come this far. #PrideMonth is a powerful message of one’s right to exist, love, and live freely. It reflects the progress and resilience born from #Stonewall. The Stonewall Riots, which began #OnThisDay (June 28) in 1969, were a series of spontaneous demonstrations by lesbian, gay, bi and trans people - particularly queer people of colour - protesting police brutality and harassment. Reflecting on Stonewall, we see powerful parallels to today’s struggles. Movements against oppression and injustice unite in standing up for human rights, bravely pushing back against systems of hatred, violence, exclusion, and discrimination. This is the time to stand proud and tall. A time to raise our voices in solidarity, for recognition, visibility, justice, and the freedom to be who we are, to love whom we love, and to live freely, fully, and safely. Let’s honor the legacy of Stonewall and continue to fight for a world where everyone can live with dignity and equality.
