Here is what the 2024 Orthoworld report is telling us: - Enabling technologies is the fastest growing segment in orthopedics: Surgeons are leaning on technologies such as robotics, navigation, connected implants and AI to improve outcomes and drive efficiencies. - There is still a gap between interest and actual adoption: Utilization remains low, with 20% of joint replacement cases using navigation and only 11% using robotics. There is confidence that enabling technologies will eventually cross the chasm and will be adopted by the majority of surgeons, but that timeline could further extend. - Navigation will remain an essential and accessible technology due to its cost, size and speed: The number of companies with navigation systems is more than double those with surgical robots. Additionally, smaller companies are expected to continue developing navigated instruments that integrate with systems on the market. According to the report, while robotics gets a lot of attention, surgeons' adoption of versatile navigation systems will play the primary role in driving market adoption of technology. Decrease fluoroscopy exposure and improve accuracy in DAA with a single stroke. A recent study*, performed by Dr Della Valle and his team at HSS, assessed Naviswiss Hip's impact on reducing radiation exposure and improving acetabular cup placement consistency in anterior approach total hip arthroplasty. Technology in Complex Revision Hip Surgery: partnering for precision and improved outcomes. Revision hip surgery can have a reoperation rate ranging from 5 to 20%, creating a serious challenge for surgeons and patients. Two of the most common reasons for revision are component dislocation and malpositioning: for this reason, Naviswiss is working with UZ Leuven to investigate the efficacy of their Hip navigation system in enhancing accuracy and reducing dislocations in complex revision hip surgeries. As Belgium's premier medical institution, and one of the top hospitals in Europe, UZ Leuven stands at the forefront of healthcare excellence. Can I have immediate value from the adoption of a hip navigation technology? A common concern with adopting new technology is the learning curve, which may cause longer surgery times and inconsistent accuracy for the early surgeries. A study on Naviswiss Hip by Dr Della Valle, first presented at ISTA 2022, concluded that a specialised arthroplasty surgeon should not experience longer surgery times or decreased navigation accuracy when starting to use imageless navigation for posterior approach THA.
