All articles in the Journal of Clinical Medicine (JCM) MDPI (ISSN: 2077-0383) Vol 13, Issue 14, are now freely available to access, read and download: https://brnw.ch/21wLuzn COVER STORY: There is a well-established relationship between different subsets of idiopathic inflammatory myopathies (IIMs, myositis) and interstitial lung disease (ILD), with lung complications sometimes presenting prior to myopathic manifestations. The subtypes of myositis include those that are strongly associated with ILD. Research from Temple Health – Temple University Health System has shown that in certain patients, these can then be further divided into subtypes using myositis-specific antibodies (MSAs), which are specific for myositis, and myositis-associated antibodies (MAAs), which can be found in myositis in overlap syndromes with other connective tissue diseases (CTDs). The aim of this review is to highlight the clinical features, diagnostic criteria, important histopathologic, laboratory, and radiographic features, and treatment modalities for those patients with myositis-associated ILD. Air pollution remains an ever-growing concern and has been shown to affect our health in different ways. A review published in the open access International Journal of Molecular Sciences MDPI explains how air pollutants can affect the function of our skin, which may lead to systemic changes. The review, cited in The Washington Post, states that air pollutants can be inflammatory as well as impacting vitamin D synthesis. The authors also discuss how air pollutants can contribute to skin conditions such as psoriasis and acne vulgaris. Importantly, the review explains how exposure to UVB rays can exacerbate the damage done by certain pollutants as they are activated in the sun. This means protecting our skin from the sun is of the utmost importance to reduce the risk of skin cancer and the harmful effects of air pollutants. This includes a focus on applying sunscreen and repairing damaged skin barriers Read more about this research: https://brnw.ch/21wLuDH or view the news story: https://brnw.ch/21wLuDL

Today is the World Health Organizationd Hepatitis day. This year's theme is ‘Take Action. Test, Treat, Vaccinate’, urging action to help eliminate this preventable disease. In recognition of this day, we explore the various types of hepatitis transmission, available vaccines, and current research on developing a vaccine against Hepatitis C (HCV). In this article, we highlight the urgent need for efficient testing and vaccination programs to detect the virus early and provide treatment to prevent its spread. Learn more: https://brnw.ch/21wLvOb

Researchers investigate the impact of sea level rise on loko iʻa, traditional Hawaiian fishponds. In the study, published in the open access journal Remote Sensing MDPI researchers are supporting the restoration of loko iʻa along the Eastern Keaukaha Coastline on Hawai‘i Island by using drone technology to investigate how sea level rise impacts the fishponds. Monitoring the water level at various sites using local in situ water sensors gives those maintaining and managing loko iʻas greater insight into tidal influences and their relation to different loko iʻa types. The researchers hope their work will support the future management of these culturally significant sites, enhancing coastal community adaptation, resilience, and food security in the face of rising sea levels.
