mc2h foundation

Gemeinnützige Organisationen

The only foundation dedicated exclusively to building early years literacy in Africa.

Info

The mc2h foundation works to help activate Africa’s potential by nurturing literacy in its youngest citizens. Because literacy is the gateway to learning – and out of poverty. So, when 9 out of 10 children in Africa can't read and write by the age of 10, potentially limiting their options and opportunities for a lifetime, it’s clear that drastic action is required. The mc2h foundation was created to help do just that. We find, support and connect initiatives that help realise our vision of every child in Africa reading fluently by the age of 10. Enabling potential to step into achievement. Follow us for news and information about our work.

🤔 One of the most frequent questions we get at mc2h is “Can it really be true that 9 out of 10 children in Africa can't read and write by the age of 10?” 😔 Sadly that’s exactly what the “State of Learning Poverty: 2022 Update” tells us, reporting that “in Sub-Saharan Africa, 86 percent of children already suffered from learning poverty in 2019” – before the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic. 💡 Drawing on authoritative data, the report was prepared and published by the World Bank, UNESCO, UNICEF, FCDO Services USAID, and Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. 📚 The World Bank defines Learning Poverty as a child being unable to read and understand a simple story by the age of 10. 🌍 The average figure globally is lower: 7 out of 10 children in low- and middle-income countries are likely to be suffering from learning poverty now. But this also makes it clear we’re faced with a pressing problem of frustrated potential and lost prosperity worldwide, and not just in Africa. 💔 Which is why the report also quantifies the individual and societal losses due to illiteracy – and they’re heart-breaking. The report concludes: “Fighting this learning crisis is the challenge of our times if we do not want to lose this generation of children and youth. Investing in their education is a precondition to avoid a future negative shock to productivity, earnings, and welfare; is essential for social stability, peace, and security; is critical for building fairer societies and ensuring equality of opportunities for all; and is essential to change mindsets regarding the urgency of climate change. This is a global challenge, and a collective effort is needed to raise awareness and support national efforts.”   We thoroughly recommend a thorough read!   You can download the report here: https://lnkd.in/dHyHcFkK   #literacymatters #literacyforall #reading #africaliteracyfoundation #boostingliteracy

🌍💫Reflections post a recent field trip to North West Nigeria…🇳🇬 ⭐️ Radio School Program ⭐️ For the past two years, we’ve been piloting literacy and numeracy lessons delivered by radio 📻📻 to 30,000 out of school children in urban and rural settings in NW Nigeria. This was the first time we were able to meet with dedicated educators, engaged communities, and most importantly witness with our own eyes, the enthusiasm of children embracing remote learning through radio waves. The project has not only provided access to education for thousands, but we saw that it has planted seeds of interest among multiple layers of stakeholders (parents, community leaders and government) - all of whom it is critical to engage if we want to achieve education sustainably and at scale. 🙏 Grateful to Maryam Y. Farouk and her team Farida and Bolarinwa Akinloluwa for all their tireless work to make this dream a reality. We were able to see behind the scenes too - where all the hard work happens: warehouses, data collection spaces, storage areas. The complexity and depth managed by this little team was awe inspiring! 🤩🤩🙏 💫We still have lots to learn, but one thing is for sure: there is a resilience and a desire to learn amongst these communities that was deeply humbling. And we hope to return next year to witness the impact of the seeds that are being planted today 🌱📚✏️📻 #literacyforall #boostliteracy #readingmatters Mocoh Patsy Shannon mc2h foundation

What better way to celebrate World Literacy Day, than to welcome a new partner to the mc2h family: the much loved African Storybook. African Storybook is an initiative of Saide, and has created an open-source digital platform of over 3000 books, in 200 African languages. They have also launched a storybook app, which allows parents and children to read storybooks even when they are offline. In particular, the foundation will be supporting African Storybook's Champion Network. This is a truly grassroots initiative where a selection of local literacy champions are given the tools and knowledge to take these digital books to their communities, and share with the people who need it most. So that children can enjoy a supply of lively, contextually-relevant, local language books to help them become the readers they deserve, and help boost literacy levels necessary for African children in the 21st century. 🌍 #literacymatters #boostingliteracy #readingforall #readingforpleasure

🌟 We are thrilled to welcome EduSpots to the mc2h family. 🤝 Why we love them: This is a community-lead initiative like no other. EduSpots unwavering commitment to fostering change through deep and longlasting community engagement is truly unique. Combine this with their educational "Spots" (reading areas for the local community), which are peppered all over Ghana, and we believe this is a unique organisation that can truly create lasting change. Thank you EduSpots and Cat Davison for everything you do 🚀📚
