How do we ensure success? With the #DecadeofSustainableTransport kicking off in 2026, IRU stressed two critical components to the UN in New York: the #GreenCompact and the #UN’s own tried-and-tested conventions. During this week’s High-level Political Forum on Sustainable Development (#HLPF) event in New York, IRU outlined – in a high-level meeting with Armida Salsiah Alisjahbana (United Nations ESCAP), Claver Gatete (United Nations Economic Commission for Africa), José Manuel Salazar-Xirinachs (ECLAC) and Tatiana Molcean (United Nations Economic Commission for Europe) – how #roadtransport can drive the Decade of Sustainable Transport and shared the sector’s views on targets and tools to measure success. 🚌 𝗕𝘂𝘀 𝗱𝗿𝗶𝘃𝗲𝗿 𝘀𝗵𝗼𝗿𝘁𝗮𝗴𝗲: 𝗛𝗼𝘄 𝗱𝗼 𝘄𝗲 𝗯𝗿𝗶𝗱𝗴𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗴𝗮𝗽? IRU member the Swedish Bus and Coach Federation has launched a new campaign to address the growing shortage of bus and coach drivers in Europe. The campaign aims to simplify access to training and attract new talent by removing entry barriers and streamlining the application process. Europe’s shortage of bus and coach drivers increased by 54% from 2022 to 2023, highlighting an urgent need for action. To address these challenges, IRU advocates lowering the minimum driving age, removing the 50-kilometre limit for young bus drivers, and providing financial subsidies for training and licensing. These initiatives are crucial to making the profession more accessible and ensuring the sustainability of Europe’s transport sector. How bad is it? Help the EU scope coach and truck parking shortages A new study funded by the European Commission seeks to quantify a major pain point for the road transport sector: the critical shortage of safe and secure parking. IRU encourages its members and the #roadtransport community to take part in the survey. The lack of suitable rest areas poses a significant threat to the well-being, safety and efficiency of professional #drivers on EU roads. It’s also one of the main causes behind the shortage of drivers, particularly long-distance drivers. Read more ➡️ https://go.iru.org/IP #DriverShortages #EU
