Together with @Aloha Pinto from the Development Bank of Latin America and the Caribbean (CAF), Raphael Callou from the Organization of Ibero-American States (OEI), and Luciano Dias Monteiro, Executive Director of the Fundación Santillana, I participated, representing the International Publishers Association - IPA, in the discussions at the 56th meeting of Mercosur Ministers of Culture at Itaipu Binational.
Various topics were discussed during the meeting, ranging from the importance of books and reading in Latin America to the preservation and appreciation of native languages and cultures. Other significant topics included the integration of these cultures into education, emphasizing the importance of an inclusive curriculum. Additionally, environmental impacts and sustainability practices were addressed, highlighting the need to reconcile development with environmental protection. These discussions underscore the importance of a holistic approach involving culture, education, and sustainability.
To foster a culture of reading, it is crucial that our governments implement public policies ensuring sustainable and equitable access to books and quality education. Additionally, we must generate and share knowledge about successful regional practices to innovate in reading promotion. Establishing a regional alliance among governments, organizations, companies, and professionals will further support the reading ecosystem and publishing industry. Finally, developing awareness initiatives is essential to highlight the importance of books and reading for personal and social development.
My special thanks to @Adriana Ortiz, Paraguay Minister of Culture and President of Mercosur Cultural.
