🚨 OUT NOW: 2024 Global Report on Internal Displacement 75.9 million people, the most ever recorded, were living in #internaldisplacement at the end of 2023. New escalations in conflict, such as in #Sudan and #Gaza, forced millions of people to flee their homes in 2023. Millions were already living in displacement, mainly from ongoing or previous conflicts. Disasters, like earthquakes, storms, floods and wildfires, also destroyed people’s homes and led to the displacement of millions more. Learn all about it in our #GRID2024 👇 https://bit.ly/3QIX4rJ

We are the world’s leading source of data and analysis on internal displacement.
Info
The Internal Displacement Monitoring Centre (IDMC) is the world's leading source of data and analysis on internal displacement. Since our establishment in 1998 as part of the Norwegian Refugee Council (NRC), we have offered a rigorous, independent and trusted service to the international community. Our work informs policy and operational decisions that improve the lives of the millions of people living in internal displacement, or at risk of becoming displaced in the future. 🚨 Over the past five years, the number of people living in internal displacement has grown by half. From 41.5 million in 2018 to a record high of 75.9 million at the end of 2023. Without lasting solutions to displacement, the number will likely continue to rise. Governments and the international community must prioritise peacebuilding, poverty reduction as well as disaster risk reduction and climate action to prevent new displacement and achieve effective solutions for internally displaced people. 📍 Colombia: Conflict dynamics have changed, but vulnerable communities are still disproportionally affected by #InternalDisplacement. In 2023, African-Colombian and indigenous communities made up 62% of the internal displacements in #Colombia's Pacific region. #DYK: Indonesia has one of the most advanced disaster displacement monitoring systems worldwide. 🌏 #Indonesia's InaRISK system, a risk analysis information system managed by the country's National Disaster Management Agency, uses displacement data to predict and mitigate the impacts of disaster displacement. Covering 497 locations, the system helps identify high-risk areas, informs early warning messages and can support the delivery of resources to communities most in need after disasters. Ongoing conflict and violence have trapped millions of people in #InternalDisplacement. Last year, conflict and violence newly displaced millions. Even after conflicts are resolved, instability, insecurity and infrastructure damage keep people from rebuilding their lives and finding sustainable solutions to their displacement. Data helps us to understand and better predict #DisasterDisplacement. 🌊 Before, during and after displacement, data is key to identifying and supporting communities. Having data on reconstruction rates, the duration of disaster displacement and the distances people are forced to travel is also essential for the development of long-term plans that mitigate the risks of displacement. From preparedness to disaster responses, Thannaletchimy Housset, PhD's expert analysis outlines how governments in Southeast Asia are using displacement data. Read here 👇 https://bit.ly/3QlibQU
Excited to have participated at IOM's RICD co-creation symposium on behalf of Internal Displacement Monitoring Centre (IDMC) , Asia Pacific is the region with most disaster displacements, accounting for 78% of the global total between 2008 and 2023. As climate change makes extreme weather events more frequent and intense, assessing and responding to the risk of disaster displacement is becoming more urgent. https://lnkd.in/eSBFzcQ3.

What happens when a disaster strikes a country after years of conflict? When Storm Daniel hit #Libya in September last year, the floods caused significant damage and displacement in vulnerable communities. Limited investment had weakened the country's infrastructure, including the dams that burst above Derna city, killing thousands of people and displacing nearly a quarter of the city’s population. 🔵 People 🔵 Movements 🔵 Events Every day, every year, we monitor #InternalDisplacement around the world. One important unit of measurement is looking into how many times people are forced to move within a year. When tracking internal displacements, we count each new forced movement of a person within the borders of their country. Sometimes, people are forced to move repeatedly to find safety. In 2023, #Canada’s hottest summer in 76 years fuelled the country’s most destructive wildfire season on record. As #ClimateChange and rising global temperatures are likely to make wildfires more intense and destructive, the Canadian government is strengthening disaster preparedness and risk reduction.
