💡 Special Issue Utopias - New Blog post 💡 Can we solve societal grand challenges by designing a prosocial economic system? Professor Dovev Lavie identifies several problems that our economic system has created and suggests a prosocial economic system, "The cooperative economy", as a possible solution. In his book "The Cooperative Economy" (Routledge, 2023)" he elaborates on the problems with our current economic system, considering the limitations of existing solutions, and discussing the specific design of the cooperative economy. The HEC Research Center for Grand Challenges is a faculty-wide focal point for research and teaching on grand challenges, which engages with society and the economy. Grand challenges comprise global societal problems, such as the transition to a carbon-free economy, the fight against poverty and inequality, and the alleviation of precarious working conditions. These challenges are complex and require the coordinated and sustained effort from business firms and other private and public actors, as well as the development of a transformative business strategy which acknowledges that companies have a responsibility that goes beyond making a profit. At the same time, there is a growing emphasis on the role of business schools to advance rigorous and societally relevant research on grand challenges. The Center acknowledges that economic and management research has a dual role in this context. Our ambition is to become a lighthouse and international center of excellence for research on grand challenges. The Center’s research activities are structured around the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals, arguably the most universal and widely adopted grand challenges.

⚡Special Issue Utopias - New Blog post⚡ How and where to negotiate a fossil-free future? Climate policy specialist Max Schmidt from the renowned Perspectives Climate Group makes a case for seeking solutions and policies beyond the official U.N. climate conferences (COPs) to keep a majority of fossil fuels in the ground. Curious? Read more about the role of bottom-up initiatives like the Fossil Fuel Non-Proliferation Treaty Initiative or so-called 'side-deals' at the COPs like the Beyond Oil and Gas Alliance (BOGA) and the Statement on International Public Support for the Clean Energy Transition (CETP). ⬇ Check out the link to the full post in the comments section ⬇ 🚀🚀🚀 And join the conversation 🚀🚀🚀 Do you think climate policy should be negotiated in a formalized system where all countries (including oil and gas producers) have a say? Or should like-minded countries and groups create new alliances in 'side-deals' at the COPs and beyond? #Sustainability #GrandChallenges #Blog #climatepolicy #unfccc #fossilfreefuture Photo Credit: Max Schmidt (People chasing the sunrise on the biblical Mount Sinai on the rest day of COP27).

📢 “Digital technologies may harm sustainability” Although a positive impact is often claimed, this is not necessarily the case, according to research by Stephanie MISSONIER and Gabriela Haenel, presented this week at the HEC Research Center for Grand Challenges. Digital technology having negative consequences for sustainability challenges the prevailing techno-optimism and the ubiquitous narrative that digital technology is “good” for the environment. I found the presentation refreshing and very inspiring, as it did not subscribe to the mainstream view that we should all go paperless. Here are some key takeaways from Stephanie's and Gabriela's presentation: ➡️ Existing research suggests a positive relationship between digital technology and sustainability goals, such as reducing carbon footprints and changing user behavior toward more sustainable practices. However, there is also research that recognizes the negative impacts of digital technologies, such as increasing greenhouse gas emissions and energy demand, electronic waste, and resource and ecosystem depletion. ➡️ Given that sustainability can be positively and negatively impacted by digital technologies, a “twin transition” is needed, i.e., transformative action that embraces digital technologies as a means to achieve sustainability goals while also ensuring that these technologies themselves are sustainable. This twin transition can be achieved either by balancing positive and negative impacts, for example through carbon offsetting, or by reducing negative impacts, for example through less and more conscious consumption. ➡️ Measuring impacts to ensure that the positive impacts outweigh the negative ones is challenging due to data quality limitations. In addition, an increase in the innovation in digital technologies can lead to a much faster increase in energy and resource consumption (rebound effect). Thus, there are serious limitations to the balancing approach and a “techno-solutionist” discourse may encourage inaction and maintain an unsustainable status quo. In this view, technological progress will not bring about emissions reductions in the future. ➡️ What can be done? One way forward is to adopt a holistic approach that explicitly acknowledges the positive and negative impacts of digital technologies. In addition, we may want to reduce digital technologies that are excessive and largely detrimental to the planet and society and practice “digital sobriety” - an approach that seeks to reduce the environmental impact of digital technology by limiting its use. ➡️ In conclusion, the promise that a digitized society will contribute to the sustainability transition cannot be fully confirmed. 👉 What is your position on this issue?
