Our intern Ryan Mak has given some really positive feedback on his experience of participating in #TeachtoReach ⬇ The Teach to Reach event in June hosted by The Geneva Learning Foundation (TGLF) was a wonderful experience, featuring numerous sessions and #networking opportunities. Participating as part of my WHOCC Imperial College London #internship, I engaged with participants from diverse countries like India, Cameroon, Ghana, and France. The event highlighted the importance of cross-border #collaboration to address common health issues, especially those exacerbated by #climatechange. I was particularly inspired by the session on global #immunisation, which offered crucial insights into introducing new #vaccines. Participants shared #strategies and #challenges, emphasising the need for tailored #globalapproaches that consider #localcontexts and #climateimpacts. As an intern at the #WHOCollaboratingCentre and a #MasterofPublicHealth student at Imperial College London, I will certainly encourage current and future #MPH #students to participate in these events. Addressing the #healthimpacts of climate change requires a #collectiveeffort, leveraging varied skills and insights. The diverse expertise and experiences of MPH students and Teach to Reach participants alike can enable effective knowledge sharing and collaboration. 👍 Great stuff Ryan! We will be encouraging more staff and students from Imperial College London to take part in Teach to Reach in the future! We would also like to thank Heini Utunen, PhD from #OpenWHO for sharing the information about Teach to Reach and The Geneva Learning Foundation (TGLF) 💚 #EPI50 #VaccinesWork #TeachtoReach #HumanlyPossible Request your invitation to join Teach to Reach: https://lnkd.in/e5ryHz7
🌍 Teach to Reach: Attention immunization and primary health care professionals 🚨 #EPI50 #VaccinesWork #TeachtoReach #HumanlyPossible Request your invitation to join Teach to Reach https://lnkd.in/e5ryHz7 Since the launch of the Expanded Programme for Immunization (EPI) in 1974, vaccination has saved 154 million lives. Today we have shared a special set of Teach to Reach Questions focused on the 50th anniversary of the Expanded Programme on Immunization (EPI). Our questions dive deep into the successes, challenges, and lessons learned from half a century of this groundbreaking global health initiative. We're asking about: ✅ Your personal experiences and stories from working in immunization ✅ The impact of EPI and the role of health workers vs. external support ✅ Challenges faced today in reaching every child with vaccines ✅ Creative solutions and innovations you've implemented ✅ Advice for global leaders on supporting immunization workers Importantly, several questions explore opportunities to integrate immunization with other key health services, connecting to additional Teach to Reach topics like neglected tropical diseases and climate change. Your insights will shed light on how to provide more holistic care. If you haven't registered yet for Teach to Reach 10, you missed these questions. 🏃️ Request your invitation now so you do not miss out on this chance to share your knowledge. Otherwise you won't receive the next round of thought-provoking questions. From a learning perspective, this collaborative process of posing questions, collecting responses from frontline health workers, and sharing that experiential wisdom back with the community is immensely powerful. Together, we're crowdsourcing solutions to accelerate progress on global immunization goals. Your voice matters! 🗣️ Let's harness our collective insights to shape the future of EPI and build healthier communities worldwide. Stay tuned for more Teach to Reach Questions as we count down to our landmark tenth event! 🎉 Kate OBrien World Health Organization Ephrem T Lemango Ted Chaiban UNICEF Martha Rebour ShotAtLife Charlie Weller Sania Nishtar Gavi, the Vaccine Alliance Revati Phalkey Zunera Gilani Folake Olayinka USAID MOMENTUM James Fulker Jason Peat Lasha Goguadze International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies - IFRC Heini Utunen, PhD Gnourfateon PALENFO Violaine Mitchell Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation Orin Levine International Vaccine Access Center at Johns Hopkins BSPH Rachel Belt Lora Shimp Felicity Cutts Franck Hilaire BETE, MD, MPH, MSc BLANCHE ANYA Francois Gasse Hope L Johnson, PhD, MPH Alex de Jonquieres Muhammad Ali Pate Thabani Maphosa Lisa Menning Ibrahim Dadari Kshitij Joshi Satish Gupta Kitty Arie Dr. David Akpan PhD

The immunization coverage in Nigeria has been a crucial aspect of public health, influencing the nation's ability to prevent the outbreak of vaccine-preventable diseases and strengthen herd immunity. This report provides a comprehensive analysis of immunization trends, challenges, and progress from 2000 to 2023, based on data from the World Health Organization UNICEF Estimates of National Immunization Coverage Immunization Coverage Trends (2000-2023) The heatmap of vaccine coverage from 2000 to 2023 shows that none of the vaccines in the national immunization schedule achieved coverage of 90% or more by 2023. Vaccine coverage ranged from 38% to 74%. Since 2004, estimates have been made for 10 new vaccines, with RotaC being the newest, achieving 49% coverage in 2023. DTP (Diphtheria, Tetanus, Pertussis) Coverage, DTP1 and DTP3 Coverage Trends: DTP1 coverage remained constant at 70% in 2023. DTP3 coverage also remained constant at 62% in 2023. Zero-dose Children: The number of zero-dose children increased from 2,103,000 in 2022 to 2,134,000 in 2023. Drop-out Rates: The dropout rate between the first and third dose of DTP was significant, leaving millions of children vulnerable to vaccine-preventable diseases. Measles Containing Vaccine (MCV) Coverage MCV1 and MCV2 Coverage: MCV1 coverage was 60% in 2023, up from 58% in 2019. MCV2 coverage remained constant at 38% in 2023. Unvaccinated Children: In 2023, 2,846,000 children missed their routine first dose of measles vaccine, slightly fewer than the 2,880,000 unvaccinated in 2019. Comparison with Global and Regional Averages DTP1 Coverage: In 2023, Nigeria's DTP1 coverage (70%) was 19 percentage points lower than the global average (89%) and 9 percentage points lower than the West and Central Africa Region (WCAR) average (79%). MCV1 Coverage: Nigeria's MCV1 coverage (60%) was 23 percentage points lower than the global average (83%) and 4 percentage points lower than the WCAR average (64%). Key Observations Despite some progress, Nigeria has consistently struggled to reach the WHO's target of 90% coverage for most vaccines. The introduction of new vaccines since 2004 shows a proactive approach, but coverage remains below optimal levels. The high number of zero-dose and under-vaccinated children highlights significant gaps in the immunization program. Challenges - Accessibility and Infrastructure: Many regions in Nigeria, especially rural and conflict-affected areas (such as Zamfara, Sokoto, Katsina, Kebbi, Kaduna, Borno, Yobe and Adamawa), have limited access to healthcare services, impacting immunization efforts. - Public Awareness and Trust - Resource Allocation and State Government support Tosin Ajayi Danjuma Udoji Makoshi Sangwe Clovis Nchinjoh, MD, MPH, MSc Damla Özyürek National Primary Health Care Development Agency (NPHCDA) Obinna Onyekwena MD, MPH KIkelomo Lambo Tambe Elvis Akem, MD, MSc, MPH.
