How much money is lost when (3rd party) cookies disappear and publishers need to use Google's new ad targeting (Sandbox)? A brand new randomized experiment carried out in Google Chrome sheds some first light on this: Prices are 31% lower in comparison to the status quo of behavioral targeting based on cookies. This is slightly better than for cookieless ads without any targeting (-34%). We need to be careful as these are preliminary results. Currently, many publishers and ad-tech companies are still testing the Sandbox technologies (how much and who? Check here: https://lnkd.in/ggeTXi2x). However, we can compare the results to other studies examining what happens to revenue/prices when cookies disappear: 📖Marotta et al 2019: -4 % publisher revenue 📖Johnson et al 2020: -52 % ad exchange revenue 📖Wang et al 2024: -6 % publisher revenue (click based) 📖Laub et al 2024: -18/23 % prices of sellers in ad exchange So the results appear aligned if we take the middle value, but also show a wide range of losses from 4-52%. The most recent study (Laub et al 2024) shows that revenue losses also depend strongly on the type of content provider, with non-premium publishers suffering greater losses. OpenAI launched GPT-4o, a model which can reason across audio, vision, and text in real time. This is just the beginning of a massive shift into new UX/UI habits that will keep accelerating the change on how 'all audiences' consume information and set their new expectations parameters. My son is almost 8 years old, he has never used Google, but he knows how to search on Youtube, IG, Netflix and different Sports apps. He will probably never write a question using Google Search and I'm very sure he won't expect to be forced to read any suggested article to get the information he is looking for. Publishers should be aware of this and rethink their user experience asap.
