We reflect with great pleasure on the first European DAO Workshop 2024 (#DAWO24), which took place last Thursday and Friday, July 4th and 5th, in Winterthur. This post is to honor the many people who made this conference possible and to extend our heartfelt thanks to them! First and foremost, we would like to extend a special thanks to our keynote speakers, who initiated valuable discussions and highlighted important aspects of their research: Ellie Rennie, who presented her ethnographic research on the #quality of #DAOs in her opening speech; Fabian Schär, who shared his #quantitative #research on the #governance of #DAOs; and Javier Arroyo Gallardo, who provided a comprehensive presentation on the #DAO #ecosystem and its #power #distribution and #participation #metrics. Further, we would like to thank the multidisciplinary insights provided by the closing panel discussion on #DAO #research by Eleonóra Bassi PhD, Florence Guillaume, Andrea Leiter and Ellie Rennie. We would also like to thank the moderators of our four workshops (I-IV): • Nathaniel Zollinger from Crypto Finance Group for the workshop on #DAOs and #DeFi. • Malik El Bay from Dezentrum Think & Do Tank for the workshop on #DAOs and #AI. • Andrea Trost and Stéphanie Fuchs 富彩蝶 from MLL Legal, and Florence Guillaume from the University of Neuchâtel, Faculty of Law for the workshop on #Legal #Aspects of #DAOs. • Sarah Nuenlist and Marc Olivier Leuzinger from DAO Suisse and trib3s for the workshop on #DAOs and #Community #Management. A big thank you also goes to our steering committee for guiding the conference organization and providing valuable advice along the way: George Giaglis, Florence Guillaume, Andrea Leiter, Daniel LIEBAU, and Claudio J. DAO Workshop (DAWO24) hat dies direkt geteilt
⭐Dream a little before you think.⭐ 🎇These words from Toni Morrison (ref. to Ellie Rennie) summarize my key learnings from the European DAO Workshop (DAWO24) taking place last Thursday and Friday in #Winterthur. It takes courage mixed with a clear vision and a touch of imagination to dive into the topic of decentralized autonomous organisations or #DAOs. 🎇More than enough reason to subject them to a critical and comprehensive discourse. The two-day workshop, organised by the Institute for Organizational Viability - part of the ZHAW School of Management and Law - was an intensive deep dive into the world of DAOs, which triggered the power of critical reflection. This journey comprised: ⭐Ellie Rennie's opening speech setting the tone and high level of expertise for the whole conference by analysing what a good DAO would look like and how it could be adapted to knowledge technologies. ⭐Critical discourses about the marketed vs. the actual realisation of decentralisation of current DAO structures, triggered by an as always strong and thought-provoking speech by academic rockstar Fabian Schär. ⭐Short, encouraging and highly professional presentations of current academic papers and abstracts reaching inter alia 🔸️from thought sparks on the complexity of Blockchain Governance in DAOs and the question of required balance in self-organization processes presented by Mark Ballandies and to be followed more closely in the joint paper with Dino Carpentras and Evangelos Pournaras 🔸️to an almost magic discourse about DAOs in a narrative analysis of the drivers of tokenized exit to community by Tara Merk. ⭐In-depth discussions on the benefits and obstacles of implementing DAO structures from a legal and tax perspective. In the workshop I was honoured to present together with Andrea Trost and Florence Guillaume, we had the opportunity to reflect on existing #tax and #legal frameworks, their international adaptation and, most importantly, future wishes and needs in this regard. My special thanks go to all the participants of our workshop and especially to Ramona Tudorancea, Ioanna Patsalidou, Roland Ringgenberg; Costin Oarda and Andrea Leiter for the engaging exchange. I am looking forward to many more! ⭐A closing panel chaired by Eleonóra Bassi PhD, in which Florence Guillaume, Andrea Leiter and Ellie Rennie critically reflected on the direction and areas of as well as the need for DAO research touching also upon the scope and nature of specific legal DAO frameworks. An important question absolutely worth further exploring. 🎇These are just a few of my highlights from the event, which sparked many new ideas and made me not only dream, but visualise new spheres of DAO structures. ⚡Congratulations to the organizational team Eleonóra Bassi, Lukas Küng and Sabrina Wollenschläger and the chairmen Michael Lustenberger and Florian Spychiger for following your dream and realizing this inspiring event.⚡ #DAOStructures #DLTLaw #TaxesRock #Blockchain

DAO Workshop (DAWO24) hat dies direkt geteilt
Hello from Zurich! Over the past two days I had to opportunity to help out on the #steeringcommittee of the DAO Workshop (DAWO24), the European DAO workshop, held at ZHAW School of Management and Law / ZHAW Zurich University of Applied Sciences. First of all thanks to the organizing team around Michael Lustenberger, Florian Spychiger, Lukas Küng, Eleonóra Bassi PhD and Sabrina Wollenschläger for inviting me and pulling off such a great #event! Let me list my personal highlights, in no particular order: 👍🏻Fabian Schär's keynote on #governance of the Ethereum. 👍🏻 Yann Vonlanthen's abstract presentation on DAO #attacks 👍🏻 Stamatis Manos Papangelou's proposed #decentralization measure 👍🏻Meeting fellow #argentinian researcher in computer science Vero Estrada-Galiñanes 👍🏻Learning about Nimrod Talmon's game-theoretical work on #voting. There were many other interesting aspects to the event, including the "apero" that was of excellent quality and worked really well as a #networkingdevice What excited me quite a bit: Apparently there will ne a second version of the event next year, in 2025 😃 Have a great rest of the weekend! DAO Workshop (DAWO24) hat dies direkt geteilt
🌍 Excited to share that I recently participated in The European DAO Workshop (DAWO) in Winterthur, Switzerland on July 4th-5th! The event focused on exploring the challenges and opportunities of Decentralized Autonomous Organizations (DAOs). 💡 During the workshop, I presented on a topic close to my heart: "Bridging Innovation and Regulation: Towards Regulatory Equivalence for Blockchain-Based Dispute Resolution Platforms." This presentation is a chapter of my thesis that I am very excited to be working on. 📢 Call for Experts in Regulation and Dispute Resolution! As part of my thesis, I will be organizing a Delphi Method focus group, aimed at exploring and advancing the fields of regulation and dispute resolution. This approach seeks to gather the valuable insights and expertise of professionals like you through structured interviews and expert opinions. If you are interested in participating or have any questions about this initiative, please reach out!! And last but not least - a big thank you to the organizers! DAO Workshop (DAWO24) Looking forward to continuing these important conversations and collaborations! #Blockchain #DAOs #Innovation #Regulation #BlockchainTechnology #DisputeResolution #DAWO2024

DAO Workshop (DAWO24) hat dies direkt geteilt
First Academic Conference - Check! It Was a Blast! 🎉 This week, I had the privilege of attending DAO Workshop (DAWO24) and presenting parts of my PhD research to an esteemed audience. As a part-time PhD student, stepping out of my comfort zone to present to such a distinguished group of researchers from around the globe was an incredible experience. Any initial nervousness quickly dissipated. The atmosphere was open and productive, with a genuine focus on content and knowledge transfer rather than titles or hierarchies. It felt like a melting pot of ideas and discussions, a stark contrast to the business-oriented conferences I've attended in the past where self-promotion and financial success were often the main focus. The research on DAO implementation, system design, social concepts, security, and inclusion — just to name a few topics — remains very diverse, with many open questions still to be explored. As a quantitative researcher, I found it inspiring to learn about various qualitative research initiatives and to exchange ideas with other quants like my PhD colleague Stamatis Manos Papangelou. My research focus was further strengthened during an engaging DAO/AI workshop moderated by Malik El Bay from Dezentrum Think & Do Tank. The group of researchers highlighted fully autonomous AI-enabled DAOs as a key opportunity. Presenting my paper at the conference on autonomy and AI inclusion in this context was truly motivating. A special thanks to Nathaniel Zollinger from Crypto Finance Group for moderating a thought-provoking debate on DAOs and DeFi. Disagreements made for a fruitful and insightful discussion. The most inspiring talk for me was given by Ehud Shapiro from The London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE), who spoke about a new internet based on grassroots architecture and its potential impacts on society and democracies. A heartfelt thank you to the team from ZHAW School of Management and Law for organizing such a fantastic conference: Michael Lustenberger, Lukas Küng, Eleonóra Bassi PhD, Sabrina Wollenschläger, and Florian Spychiger. I would also like to express my gratitude to George Giaglis from Institute For the Future (IFF) and University of Nicosia for all the support throughout my journey. I'm looking forward to the next conference and sharing our research with more eager minds around the world! #DAO #Bitcoin #AI #Crypto #Autonomy #Research #ForABetterWorld

Day 1 of (#DAWO24) was great, now we are looking forward to start out the second day soon! See you at the welcome coffee! ☕️🥐
Preparing to head out bright and early for the second day of the DAO Workshop (DAWO24) in Winterthur. So far the ZHAW School of Management and Law has been an amazing host, and the community of researchers presenting on #DAO issues stellar in welcoming the Caribbean migratory bird that I am, because whether we are working on #cayman foundations as legal wrappers or #swiss foundations or associations as legal wrappers, we all want the conversation to advance and the industry to be better served. Highlights of my first day: - from Ellie Rennie's opening keynote: "ethnography was the only way to understand dynamics in communities" and "DAOs could enable communities to learn from each other and share knowledge"🙏 - discussing self-owned concepts with Una Wang (could we perhaps optimize management of public resources this way? would self-owned essential infrastructure be better managed?) 💡 - discussing the evolution of business models in #opensystems with Lukas Küng (we are just seeing the beginning of this, but it'll be quite transformative) 💥 - first enjoyable tax discussion ever with Stéphanie Fuchs 富彩蝶 as part of the legal workshop held with Florence Guillaume and Andrea Trost which focused on why #DAOs need legal wrappers in the current legal environment, why we need to experiment prudently, and how #swiss foundations and associations can be useful 🎁 - learning from Fabian Schär about centralization risks, whether direct or indirect, and how transparency serves for stress-testing any systems. Looking forward to the second day! [photo is opening with Conference Chairs Florian Spychiger and Michael Lustenberger]
