Innovative carbon removal and accidental emissions insurance which pays in carbon removals, not cash
Info
At CarbonPool, we help society reach NetZero by providing in-kind insurance for failure to achieve net zero commitments due to shortfalls, reversals, business interruptions and natural catastrophes that either reduce the amount of carbon dioxide removals contracted for or unintentionally add carbon dioxide back into the atmosphere. CarbonPool's team of insurance leaders, climate scientists, weather modellers, geographers, and engineers assesses each risk to build bespoke risk models. The premiums collected from each client are invested, alongside CarbonPool's own capital, into high quality carbon removal projects, to be able to pay out in-kind. Currently in the license application process for a Swiss regulated (re)insurance license, CarbonPool can already pre-underwrite your exposures - just reach out to ask for a quote! info@carbonpool.earth

Building a best-in-class model to assess our client's carbon risks requires innovating at the cutting edge. At CarbonPool, our Carbon Risk Model leverages #machinelearning tools to assess biomass from space, create innovative clustering algorithms to analyze fire risk, and more, all with the help of data partners like the European Space Agency - ESA. For anyone interested in how we are making the most of #AI for our monitoring and verification of carbon project sequestration, tune in to CarbonPool Principal Climate Modeller Kasia Tokarska de los Santos, PhD's lecture today, sponsored by Google DeepMind, GitHub, CIFAR, and Mila - Quebec Artificial Intelligence Institute. #carbon #carbonmarket #CDR #sustainability #netzero
We can't wait to hear from Kasia Tokarska de los Santos, PhD on day 6 of the Climate Change AI Virtual Summer School! This lecture will focus on AI for Monitoring, Reporting, and Verification of GHG emissions. Register now to attend live: https://lnkd.in/dxdF9waH

Great insights from CarbonPool co-founder and CFO Frederic Olbert on the many exciting developments in the carbon market coming out of Latin America. As Frederic said, this is a space to watch.
Latin America is the space to watch when it comes to carbon removals! This became very clear speaking to the many impressive people I met at the @IETA Latin America Summit last week: 🌳 Highly committed and experienced project developers such as Paula Moura, Alexis Leroy, PUR 💲 Specialized investors bringing the financing needed to rapidly scale the carbon removals market with Removall Carbon, Marie Cubertafont Svenja Telle, Catalina Mejia, 🌐 New and exciting carbon standards that combine scientific rigour with on-the-ground experience (plus a great service for developers) as seen in Cercarbono, Carlos Trujillo Echeverri, Alex Saer and experts shaping policy at the highest level Nathalie FLORES.. At @CarbonPool we will provide the in-kind insurance that is needed to guarantee carbon deliveries for developers and buyers alike, de-risk investments in carbon projects, and ensure buyers meet their net zero targets. Nothing is more energizing than meeting with and learning from our clients that are out there every day creating the carbon removals we so desperately need! #LACS2024

"If we can't measure it, we can't insure it." CarbonPool co-founder and CEO Coenraad Vrolijk called this our "golden rule" in a recent interview with the Financial Times' Sustainable Views publication, and for good reason. At CarbonPool, accurately assessing risk to carbon projects is the heart of our work. If we can accurately assess risk, we can give our clients the lowest possible premium with the greatest possible coverage. We can make sure our own portfolio of carbon removal replacement credits is the highest quality on the market. That is why our team of climate, weather, and forestry experts have worked for over a year to create and perfect our Carbon Risk Model, a proprietary statistical model using best-in-class geospatial data, remote sensing technologies, and machine learning to produce a probabilistic distribution of a project's carbon outcome--in other words, how likely, and by how much, a project will experience a shortfall in the yield of carbon credits (leading to under-deliveries) or a reversal of issued credits. Many thanks to Sustainable Views for featuring both Coenraad and Nandini Wilcke, our co-founder and COO, on how carbon insurance can solve the carbon market's credibility crisis. 🚨Webinar announcement🚨 What are registry buffer pools, and can they really secure carbon credits’ “permanence” as they claim? Buffer pools are the carbon market’s default mechanism to mitigate against carbon credit reversals, and many registries have promised that they secure a credit's permanence for as many as 100 years. But CarbonPool, alongside other reputable players in this space, have looked into this claim and found that buffer pools lack many of the fundamental principles required for them to effectively act as a permanence mechanism on that time scale. In fact, there is a real risk that these pools will fail to provide the permanence they promise in the long-term. This is a problem that needs urgent solving to ensure the planet has a chance of achieving net zero. To understand how buffer pools really work—and how they don’t—join us on July 22, 2024 at 4pm CEST for a panel discussion alongside Elias Ayrey (PhD) from Renoster, Dr. Kirti Ramesh from BeZero Carbon, and Injy Johnstone from the University of Oxford, with Vaughan Lindsay serving as the moderator. It was “DAC week” at CarbonPool, with Mathilda Strom visiting the Airhive lab in London with Patch, and Brooke Davies, Beat Krauer, Kasia Tokarska de los Santos, PhD, and Dr. Maximilian Kremer visiting the very first Climeworks DAC plant in Hinwil, Switzerland with ClimatePartner. Our team loved learning more about the latest innovations in DAC technology, and how far the industry has come in such a short amount of time. Some observations from us: 1️⃣ As Mathilda said, commercial applications with strong business metrics drive success in carbon markets. This was apparent in Airhive's work and strategy in providing The Coca-Cola Company with a cheaper and more environmentally efficient source of the CO2 going into its carbonated drinks. 2️⃣ As Brooke observed, Climeworks's technology is remarkable in the strides it has made towards scaling an engineered solution that can viably promise a thousands-year permanence time scale. From a couple hundred tonnes of carbon removed each year at its first plant to the promise of megatonnes removed each year in its upcoming generations, it gave us hope for the deployment of durable CDR at climate relevant scales. 3️⃣ Both companies mentioned the number of natural and machinery risks that create a risk of credit shortfall, from temperature variability to equipment maintenance and more, opening up an opportunity for insurance to step in and play a role in guaranteeing delivery. Many thanks to the Airhive and Climeworks teams for the tours!

When I was a junior real estate lawyer at A&O Shearman or a political science major at Columbia University I never would have imagined that I would one day be a founder of CarbonPool, the world's first in-kind carbon credit insurer, and have the opportunity to introduce our business at Insurtech Insights in New York City. Thanks to my fellow panelists Charlie Sidoti and Gary Hoberman for an engaging discussion and to my first mentor, who gave me the sound advice to remain open to opportunity and never to plan too far in advance, because you never know where the road is going to lead you!
Last week, CarbonPool co-founder and COO Nandini Wilcke spoke at the Insuretech Insights USA conference on the panel, "Risk Revolution: Unveiling Winning Strategies for Sustainable Underwriting and a Greener Future.” It's encouraging to see the insurance industry stepping up to the challenge of finding effective risk mitigation solutions for the climate transition, but talk must be followed up with action. At CarbonPool, we are innovating in the insurance industry by becoming the world's first insurance company to build a balance sheet of high-quality carbon removals, so that we can pay our clients' claims in the actual value of their lost investments--while also contributing to scaling the carbon market ourselves at the same time. #carbon #sustainability #carbonmarket #carboninsurance #insuretech
