AI in retail offers a whole lot of potential for tailored solutions. Thank you Nicolas Maréchal for the example with Action Detection, an embedded Computer Vision application that safeguards privacy (and inventory!)
#GenerativeAI is the buzzword of the year, with CEOs everywhere jumping on the bandwagon. But while everyone’s caught up in the excitement, let’s not overlook other AI innovations that are just as transformative - and more reliable too (hallucinations, anyone?)... One of my favorite applications right now is Action Detection. This technology can recognize human actions in videos and images - like spotting shoplifters in supermarkets in real-time! 🦹♂️📸 Picture this: AI can detect suspicious movements, such as someone trying to slip items into their pocket, and instantly alerts security - ensuring you'll be stopped before you even get to the door! It’s already making waves in the UK, contributing to the prevention of over 8 million stolen items last year 🥑🍞🍫. Not only does it help reduce losses, but it also cuts security costs by letting cameras handle most of the work. In Switzerland, retailers could lead innovation by adopting similar AI solutions to tackle shoplifting - and more (Coop’s partnership with Google’s AI for reducing food waste is a great example). While some raise concerns about privacy, it’s worth noting that AI technology like this can be deployed with privacy in mind (i.e., videos can be processed directly on devices using edge AI, ensuring data is handled securely and in line with regulations like the EU AI Act). In any case, let this be a friendly reminder: #shoplifting isn’t a smart move, especially when AI is enhancing security! 🤖 (GIF credit: https://www.lexius.ai/)
