How Long Do the Effects of CBD Gummies Last?

Share if you care

For adults trying CBD gummies for the first time, a common question is: How long do the effects of CBD gummies last? The answer isn’t crystal clear, as you can imagine. A lot of factors go into how quickly the body absorbs CBD, and how that CBD absorption can vary depending on the type of product you choose. Edible products, like CBD gummies, are absorbed more slowly than CBD vapes and CBD oil tinctures, for instance. Understanding, then, that there are a lot of variables involved in CBD absorption that can make your CBD experience different from someone else’s, you can still make a rough estimate that the effects of CBD gummies should last from six to eight hours.

Now, let’s talk about some of those variables, so that you can have a better understanding of what CBD is, how CBD affects the body, and how the effects of CBD gummies might be different from other CBD products

What Is CBD?

CBD is one of a group of chemical compounds produced by the cannabis plant, called cannabinoids. There are over a hundred cannabinoids in cannabis, and CBD (or, cannabidiol) is one of the two most prevalent (along with THC). Legal CBD products are made from a low-THC form of cannabis, called hemp.

While THC has psychotropic properties and can get you “high” if taken in large enough quantities, CBD is non-intoxicating. Instead, CBD delivers health and wellness benefits, due to its interaction with the body’s endocannabinoid system (or, ECS).** The ECS helps the body to maintain balance, or homeostasis. CBD interacts with receptors in the endocannabinoid system and bolsters its performance, delivering a wealth of health and wellness benefits.** This interaction is a major reason why CBD products, such as the gummies we’re discussing today, have become such popular health and wellness products for adults.**

What Are CBD Gummies?

CBD gummies are chewy, flavorful supplements that contain CBD and, sometimes, other health-boosting ingredients.** CBD gummies are not the same as regular gummies and should always be treated as health products.**

Types of CBD Gummies

We carry a variety of organic CBD gummies at CBDfx. These organic CBD gummies include Original Mixed Berry CBD Gummies, CBD Gummies with Apple Cider Vinegar, CBD Multivitamin Gummies for Men, CBD Multivitamin Gummies for Women, CBD Gummies with Turmeric and Spirulina, CBD Gummies for Sleep, and CBD Mushroom Gummies for Wellness. Each CBD gummy serving contains 50 mg of CBD and non-detectable levels of THC.

Some adults prefer to have additional THC content in their CBD gummies. For those folks, we have a selection of legally compliant, organic THC gummies, with the delta-9 THC content boosted right up to the legal limit. Our organic full spectrum CBD + THC gummy collection includes Berry Buzz Sativa THC Gummies (25 mg CBD, 5 mg THC per serving), Lemon Dream Indica THC Gummies (25 mg CBD, 5 mg THC per serving), and Magic Melon Sativa THC Gummies (30 mg CBD, 10 mg THC per serving).

Bioavailability & CBD Gummies

Bioavailability refers to the rate and amount of CBD absorption when you take a CBD product. When you take CBD gummies, the bioavailability of your product may differ—perhaps even greatly—from your experience with other types of CBD products. There are several different factors involved in this CBD experience.

Of course, the uniqueness of your own body plays a huge role in the bioavailability of your CBD gummies. Factors such as height, weight, metabolism, body mass, and CBD tolerance all play a part in determining how quickly your body can absorb CBD and how long those CBD effects last.

CBD Gummies’ Strength: Full-Spectrum CBD vs Broad-Spectrum CBD vs CBD Isolate Gummies

The milligrams of CBD in your CBD gummies certainly has a lot to do with how strong and long-lasting the effects are. The CBD type used in your hemp gummies can play into that, as well. There are three types of CBD: full-spectrum CBD, broad-spectrum CBD, and CBD isolate.

Full-spectrum CBD is the CBD oil, as it is initially extracted from the hemp plant. Full spectrum oil contains all of the cannabinoids (including CBD and trace amounts of THC), terpenes, flavonoids, and healthy fatty acids of the hemp plant.

Broad spectrum CBD is the same oil, only with detectable levels of THC filtered out. A few of the other hemp compounds get filtered out in the process. Still, broad spectrum is a robust form of CBD and is able to produce the Entourage Effect.**

The term “Entourage Effect” refers to the phenomenon by which CBD and other hemp compounds, when consumed together, actually bolster one another’s effects, giving you a deeper CBD experience than if you simply took CBD by itself.** Both full spectrum and broad spectrum CBD are capable of producing the Entourage Effect.**

CBD isolate is CBD only, with all other hemp compounds stripped away. As such, CBD isolate is 99% pure CBD. With no other hemp compounds available, CBD isolate cannot produce the Entourage Effect.

CBD Gummies & Edibles

Gummies and other CBD edibles must pass through the digestive tract before the CBD can be absorbed into the bloodstream. In general, this can take from 30 minutes to two hours. That may seem like a bit of a wait compared to other types of CBD products, but the plus side is that CBD edibles stay in your system much longer than CBD vapes and sublingual CBD oil. Generally speaking, the effects of CBD edibles, like gummies, can last six to eight hours—again depending on bioavailability factors.

Other Types of CBD Products

CBD gummies and edibles are only one type of CBD product. There are other CBD products, as well, which enter the bloodstream differently. Sublingual CBD oil tinctures are held beneath the tongue, where the CBD enters the bloodstream via the capillaries of the mouth. In general, the CBD from this sort of product is absorbed between 15 and 30 minutes.** The effects of sublingual CBD oil generally last from four to six hours.** CBD vape products enter the bloodstream through the lining of the lungs, which can happen in just a few minutes or even seconds.** The speedy availability of CBD with vape products is somewhat offset, though, by shorter-lasting effects: generally, one to two hours.**

CBD topicals, such as CBD creams and balms, are a bit different. These CBD products are applied directly to an area of the body affected by minor pain or discomfort. The CBD absorbs into the skin, down to the affected area. Generally speaking, this takes about 15 minutes.** The effects of topical CBD products can last up to six hours.**

Here’s a handy chart comparing general adult experiences with CBD gummies versus other CBD oil products. Again, this doesn’t factor in variables, such as personal bioavailability factors, CBD strength, and type of CBD used.

Type of CBD Product CBD Absorption Time CBD Effects
CBD gummies & edibles 30 minutes to two hours Six to eight hours
Sublingual CBD oil 15 to 30 minutes Four to six hours
CBD vape products A few minutes (or less) One to two hours
CBD topical products 15 minutes Up to six hours

Other Things to Consider Before Purchasing a CBD Gummy Product

The hemp plant is what’s known as a bioaccumulator, meaning that hemp absorbs pretty much everything that’s in the soil surrounding the plant. This can be great when the hemp plant is absorbing nutrients, but not so great when there are toxins in the soil, such as pesticides and heavy metals. So, always insist on CBD products made with organic hemp.

Also, it’s important to know how the CBD oil was extracted from the hemp plant. If a cheap solvent was used, that residue can end up in the hemp’s CBD oil—and in your CBD gummies! Carbon dioxide delivers clean CBD oil extraction with no such residues. So, only shop with CBD companies that use clean CO2 oil extraction.

You can verify the purity and potency of your CBD gummies by consulting the product’s Certificate of Analysis (COA). This document is a third-party lab test that shows how much CBD, THC, and other cannabinoids are in your product, as well as any of the aforementioned toxins that might be in your gummies. If the CBD brand you’re considering doesn’t provide a COA, find a new CBD brand before you purchase your gummies!

At CBDfx, we insist on using only organic CBD, extracted with clean CO2, for all of our gummies and other products. And we provide a COA with every one of our products, including our best-selling CBD gummies!
