CBD Gummies and Drug Testing: What You Need to Know

Share if you care

CBD gummies are extremely popular health supplements for adults in the US and around the world. In addition to wellness-boosting CBD, gummies also offer the reassurance of a consistent dose with every gummy serving, plus easy portability and great flavor.** But for many users, there’s always the concern: Will my CBD gummies show up on a drug test? The answer, unfortunately, is “maybe.” But you can make informed choices on your CBD gummy product that can help prevent or at least lessen the chance of a false-positive drug test.

In this article, we’ll examine the question of CBD and drug testing. We’ll look at what CBD is and the different types of CBD oil used in CBD products. We’ll also look at some of the other factors that may affect your drug test, including your body’s bioavailability for CBD and the different types of drug tests.

Let’s begin with a little refresher course on just what, exactly, CBD is!

What Is CBD?

CBD (or, cannabidiol) is a chemical compound produced by the cannabis plant. Our products are made with a low-THC form of cannabis called hemp (as opposed to high-THC marijuana). By law, hemp contains less than 0.3% THC.

CBD and THC are the two most abundant of the 100-plus cannabinoids found in cannabis. Unlike THC, cannabidiol is non-intoxicating. Instead, CBD delivers health and wellness benefits due to its interaction with the body’s endocannabinoid system (ECS.)**

The endocannabinoid system helps the body to maintain homeostasis, or balance. When CBD interacts with receptors in the ECS, it boosts the performance of this system.** This, in turn, delivers a bevy of health and wellness benefits to you!**

Full-Spectrum CBD vs Broad-Spectrum CBD vs CBD Isolate

There are different types of CBD used to make CBD products. The type of CBD used in your product can affect the likelihood of a positive drug test, as you’ll see in a moment.

Full-spectrum CBD is CBD oil as it is initially extracted from the hemp plant. This robust CBD oil contains all of the cannabinoids, terpenes, flavonoids, and healthy fatty acids of the plant. This includes trace amounts of THC (less than 0.3% THC, by law).

Many adult users prefer to have that THC filtered out. Broad-spectrum CBD is the same CBD oil as full-spectrum CBD, only all detectable levels of THC have been filtered (along with a few other cannabis compounds, in the process).

Both full-spectrum CBD and broad-spectrum CBD allow users to enjoy the Entourage Effect.** This refers to the way in which cannabis compounds interact with one another. When taken together, CBD and other cannabis compounds actually bolster one another’s effects, giving you a stronger overall CBD experience.

There is a version of CBD with no other cannabis compounds present other than the cannabidiol itself: CBD isolate. CBD isolate is 99% pure CBD. It doesn’t produce the Entourage Effect, but CBD isolate does give you the peace of mind of no THC in your bloodstream, in case you have a drug test coming up.

What Are CBD Gummies

CBD gummies are chewy CBD-infused supplements. CBD gummies are not the same thing as regular gummies. CBD-infused gummies are health and wellness products.**

As noted at the top of the article, many adults prefer CBD gummies over other types of CBD products because of their pre-measured servings, their portability, and their flavor (which can be much more pleasant than a CBD oil tincture or capsule).

CBD Products and Drug Testing

So, where do CBD products, such as gummies, land when you’re being tested for marijuana? That’s the drug test you’re likely to get from an employer or from law enforcement. They’re testing for THC, the intoxicating compound found largely in marijuana. Unfortunately, if you have enough hemp-derived THC in your system, you can still end up with a positive drug test.

How Long Do Cannabinoids Stay in Your System?

If you have a drug test coming up, it’s important to gauge just how long CBD, THC, and other cannabinoids stay in your system. This might help you plan ahead if you’re worried about potentially having a false positive test result due to build-up of THC in your system from CBD gummies or other hemp products.

How long CBD stays in your system is dependent on your unique physiology. Factors like diet, activity level, how much water you drink, and your age can all affect how your body absorbs and processes CBD and THC. How your body processes and stores CBD and THC may differ from other people, which is worth keeping in mind when gauging how long CBD and THC remain in your system. In other words, don’t rely on your buddy’s test experience.

Types of Drug Test

There are different ways to test for THC. Here are the types of tests generally used to detect THC and marijuana.

Urine

Urine tests are the most common type of drug test. Typically, this is the type of test used by employers. CBD, THC, and other cannabinoids remain at detectable levels in the urine for around three days. But again, remember that this length of time can depend on your body’s unique physiology and how much CBD or THC you consume––and how often. For heavy users, cannabinoids can last in the urine for up to six weeks.

Hair

Testing hair follicles is a little less common than other types of tests. THC can remain in a single hair follicle at detectable levels for around 90 days.

Blood

Cannabinoids can remain at detectable levels in the blood for around seven days.

Saliva

Saliva tests can detect cannabinoids, like THC, around 72 hours after consumption. As with the other tests, this can be affected by how often you use detectable amounts of THC and other cannabinoids.

Finding the Right CBD Gummies for You

While all of the CBD products we offer are compliant with the 2018 US Farm Bill, many still contain trace amounts of THC. As you’ve seen in our section on full-spectrum CBD vs broad-spectrum CBD vs CBD isolate, full and broad spectrum products still contain trace amounts: full spectrum much more so than broad spectrum (which contains undetectable levels of THC). If you take enough of these products, particularly with daily use, you may test positive for THC even though you didn’t use marijuana. So, it’s vital that you understand what kind of CBD is being used in your gummies.

For your convenience, we’ve created a handy gummy comparison table. You’ll note that we do offer a few full spectrum THC gummies with added delta-9 THC. These are still Farm Bill-compliant, but the THC levels are pushed right up to the legal limit.
