Repeat of Courses

When the appropriate course is available, the course, when a grade other than W has been assigned, may be repeated to earn a better grade. Upon successful completion of the course at a later date, the cumulative average is adjusted to reflect the highest grade earned.* However, each grade earned will appear on the academic transcript and count toward attempted credits. Students are required to pay any applicable tuition charges for all repeated coursework. Students are eligible for financial aid for only 1 repetition of a previously passed course.

When a student has repeated a course previously applied to an awarded degree, each grade earned will be included in the cumulative point average.

Course Deficiency

A course deficiency occurs when a student fails to complete a course with a satisfactory grade, either by failing the course or by receiving a grade that does not meet the minimum required by the student’s program. Academic warning, probation and dismissal are not determined from 1 course but by the cumulative GPA.

Students who fail a course after a second attempt will be assigned a course deficiency hold and will be required to meet with an academic counselor/advisor in Student Academic & Financial Services. Academic counselors/advisors will review the following options with the student:

  • Consider a change of program.
  • Repeat the same course which will result in only the highest grade earned being calculated in the cumulative average.
  • Student may be advised to take a pre-approved course at another institution outside Johnson & Wales University. The original grade will remain on the student’s transcript but will be excluded from the cumulative average.

Students opting to repeat the course will be encouraged to attend content tutoring. The course deficiency hold will be removed once the student meets with an academic counselor/advisor.
