Job Description:

Fraud Risk Management is increasingly important to policy holders. To serve Sun Life’s clients as industry leaders, Canadian Operations’ Fraud Risk Management area will identify, mitigate and respond to criminal threats using various tools, technologies and strategies.

The successful candidate will have law enforcement experience. Travel and field work will be moderate to frequent.

Reporting to the Senior Investigator for Fraud Risk Management, the Investigator will be responsible for detecting, investigating, and preventing fraud impacting the Canadian Group Benefits business. The incumbent will work closely with relevant teams in Fraud Risk Management to support active fraud investigations. They will deliver timely updates and outcomes to key stakeholders and management. Using advanced interviewing skills, investigative excellence, and attention to detail, the successful candidate will focus on investigating insurance-based frauds.

What will you do?

  • Investigate confidential and sensitive fraud cases
  • Manage a caseload of investigations by leading various aspects of an investigation and providing support to others
  • Lead various types of field work and attend audits, interviews and client meetings with investigators
  • Interview witnesses to collect details about the fraud, identify patterns and communicate recommendations to reduce risk
  • Collaborate with various business units within the organization and liaise with external stakeholders and partners
  • Maintain and develop relationships with other financial institutions and law enforcement agencies
  • Identify trends, report on issues and recommend appropriate actions to mitigate risk in the prevention and detection of criminal activity that can threaten the integrity and sustainability of group benefit plans.
  • Provide the Fraud Risk Management team with guidance and direction on innovative investigative approaches that would be most valuable in a given situation
  • Prepare and participate in court/complaint cases, including arbitration hearings, to resolve investigations
  • Research, gather data, prepare and organize documentation for other business areas, law enforcement and senior leaders
  • Provide training on relevant and current best practices including, interviewing, report writing and investigative techniques
  • Prepare documentation, such as investigation reports, management briefings, or other communications in a timely professional and proficient manner
  • Promote education and awareness to internal and external stakeholders related to fraud prevention
  • Identify and partner to develop, implement and maintain processes for the handling of investigations
  • Keep current on industry trends and schemes impacting benefit plans
  • Demonstrate professional judgement in all aspects of investigations

What do you need to succeed?

  • Previous law enforcement experience
  • Knowledge of group insurance business and regulatory environment
  • Understanding of contractual language, administration guidelines, and provincial and federal legislation applicable to the industry
  • Superior conflict management, critical thinking and interpersonal skills with the ability to develop and execute effective investigative plans
  • Proven ability to prioritize assignments and organize field work to maximize productivity and achieve objectives
  • Develop operational plans and identify effective use of resources
  • Advanced oral and written communication skills to prepare reports and liaise with other business units and stakeholders
  • Adaptability and flexibility to execute action plans
  • Strong negotiating and influencing skills
  • Ability to work in a team environment and possess cooperation and collaborative skills
  • Strong analytical skills and community awareness with attention to accuracy and details
  • Solid decision-making skills and innovative thinking
  • Proven efficiency and knowledge of electronic programs and databases (Word, Excel, Tableau, Adobe, Outlook)
  • Ability to collect, evaluate and analyze open-source intelligence
  • Problem solving skills to quickly analyze a situation and adopt a reasonable course of action
  • Identify processes to mitigate fraud and/or abuse across group benefit plans
  • Fluency in French (preferred) and English (both languages written and spoken)

Unique Notes:

  • This position can be based in Waterloo or Toronto with moderate to frequent travel
  • Working outside of core business hours may be required on occasion

The Base Pay range is for the primary location for which the job is posted. It may vary depending on the work location of the successful candidate or other factors. In addition to Base Pay, eligible Sun Life employees participate in various incentive plans, payment under which is discretionary and subject to individual and company performance. Certain sales focused roles have sales incentive plans based on individual or group sales results.
