Elon Musk's Neuralink announce Data Compression Challenge open to public.  The main idea of the invention is to provide efficient interface between brain and machine/computer. Implant in the brain is expected to transfer wirelessly huge amounts of data to computer and, possibly, back. It's clear that the system has many restrictions like: limited energy reserve and limited computational power. Even if theoretically compression at the 200/1 rate would be feasible (what is not), the limitations of energy resources and computation would not allow to implement that sophisticated and computationally intensive transformation in acceptable cost.  https://lnkd.in/eS-r5DuS

YOU ARE EXPECTED TO DEMONSTRATE 'FIT' IN YOUR COLD MAIL TO A PI Someone wrote a cold mail to a potential Supervisor seeking a PhD position in a Canadian University. After going through the mail, the Prof., replied with these words: "Check out publications from our lab, many of which are by our graduate students (and some by honours students). If you have many questions upon reading through these papers, then you are likely a good fit for our lab." From the response, it could be infer that the prospective graduate student didn't show how his/her research interest aligns with the research area of the Prof's group. It means he/she didn't demonstrate 'fit' in the cold mail. Demonstrating "fit" for a Principal Investigator's (PI's) work in a cold email means showing that your research interests, skills, and goals align with their research focus and objectives. It involves highlighting how your expertise and experience make you a strong candidate to contribute to their research group and projects. To demonstrate fit, you can: 1. Show familiarity with the PI's research: Mention specific publications, projects, or theories that resonate with your interests and goals. 2. Explain how your skills align: Describe your relevant skills, experience, and education that align with the PI's research focus. 3. Present a research idea: Propose a research idea that builds upon or complements the PI's work, demonstrating your understanding of their research objectives. 4. Highlight shared research interests: Emphasize the common research interests and goals that you share with the PI, showcasing your enthusiasm for collaborating with their group. 5. Demonstrate your value: Explain how your unique perspective, skills, or experience can enhance the PI's research projects and contribute to their team. By effectively demonstrating fit, you can grab the PI's attention, showcasing that you're a motivated and qualified candidate for potential research opportunities in their lab. The perfect fit is not just about finding a lab, but finding a home for your research interests.

An open letter by a group of researchers and members of the Mila - Quebec Artificial Intelligence Institute community on the use of AI systems in warfare: "the alarming case of AI use in Gaza and the occupied West Bank" In it, we describe how these AI systems violate Mila's ethical principles (the Montreal Declaration on Responsible AI) and call for an end of the use and development of these technologies. I’m happy to share our work on autonomous driving systems (ADS) testing, which we presented at the main research track of the 17th IEEE International Conference on Software Testing, Verification and Validation (ICST) in Toronto last week! 👉 Our work is titled “Assessing Quality Metrics for Neural Reality Gap Input Mitigation in Autonomous Driving Testing”. 🚗 Did you know that simulation-based testing is the go-to method for testing ADS? It’s safe, controlled, and cost-effective. But here’s the catch: simulations often don’t perfectly match real-world conditions, leading to ADS behavioural differences between testing in simulation and the real world. This is known as the sim2real gap. 🖼 To tackle this gap, we can use Image-to-Image (I2I) neural translation to make simulated environments look more realistic. In our study, we explore how well two popular I2I techniques, pix2pix and CycleGAN, close this gap for vehicle detection and lane-keeping tasks. 📊 We use a set of 13 well-established metrics from the literature to evaluate the quality of the generated images. However, are we sure that an image that appears more realistic makes the ADS behave as it would with real data? Therefore, we examine how the ADS’s behaviour changes when using the generated images. Our approach involves analyzing the correlation between the ADS behaviour and the perceived image quality of the generated images compared to real-world data. 🔍 Our findings: The success of these techniques can vary depending on the task. We also discovered that current evaluation metrics sometimes miss the mark. We found a stronger correlation with ADS behaviour by fine-tuning these metrics to be task-specific, leading to better ways to pick the right I2I technique for reliable testing. 📄 Interested? 🌟 Excited to Announce Our Latest Publication! 🌟 We are thrilled to share that our paper, titled "Innovative Dual-Pronged Approach: F1 and F2 Feature Extraction Methodologies Enhanced by Ensemble Learning for Efficient Multiple Sclerosis Classification", has been published in the proceedings of the 19th Iranian International Industrial Engineering Conference (IIIEC 2023). In our research, we explored advanced ensemble learning techniques, incorporating Random Forest and Ada Boost algorithms, to significantly improve the accuracy of diagnosing Multiple Sclerosis (MS). Our dual-pronged feature extraction methodologies, F1 and F2, demonstrated superior performance, making strides in the early detection and intervention of this challenging neurological condition. Key Highlights: 1.Enhanced diagnostic accuracy for Clinically Definite Multiple Sclerosis (CDMS). 2.Addressed potential data leakage with a strategic feature extraction process. 3.Developed models adaptable to regions with limited MRI access. This work represents a significant step forward in leveraging machine learning for medical diagnostics, and we are proud of the contributions it makes to the field.
