You’re starting an online business. How can you measure your success?
Ultimately, the success of any business is based on two KPIs: Customer Lifetime Value (CLV) and Customer Acquisition Costs (CAC). These are the two most important metrics to monitor. Let's break it down: CLV depends on your average order value, the repeat purchase rate and your customer's lifespan. I like to boil that down to the average gross margin divided by the churn rate. CAC is your marketing and sales costs per acquired new customer. Functioning business models typically run on a CLV/CAC ratio of 3-4 leaving enough room for Opex, Capex and net profit. Younger, more aggressively growing companies often aim for a CLV/CAC ratio of 1-2 but it's hard to be profitable at this ratio.

Make sure to avoid data silos. Email marketing is only as strong as the data it is based on. Good solutions offer their own CRM or CDP or at least integrate flawlessly with external solutions. This way, you can use your data holistically in one place creating highly targeted and relevant user experiences. Marketing automation and AI is a great way to bring this data together to personalize, segment and trigger emails efficiently.

Email is still the number one online marketing channel and it will stay this way for a while. If you want to make your EMM successful, make sure your email is as relevant as possible: that means sending the right content to the right user at the right point in time. Use personalization, segmentation, AI or programmatic solutions like send-at-best-time, transactional or trigger emails, set up workflows through marketing automation and combine data with your CRM, e-commerce solution or CDP.
