Just had to share this gem from Collision Conf in #Toronto. Among the #startups and VCs, I spotted a guy with a shirt saying, "Ask me about my CAC." Naturally, I asked. Sebastian Fallenbüchl, BASc., the wearer, shot back, "My CAC is getting lower as you just approached me." Genius. Seb’s witty remark was more than just a laugh — it was a reminder that business is about people. Metrics like CAC are crucial, but so are the connections and conversations that drive them down. Meet Sumer Chawla, a partnership leader at Shopify. Sumer covers how he spent his time at the conference to learn from other modern partnership professionals and executives. Catalyst is a modern conference, we're bringing new experiences to the event and this year will be no different. Why? Because for us the conference is a product, we review it's features to make sure they meet the needs of our attendees. When one feature stops meeting the needs we deprecate it and introduce a new feature. Here's an example: In 2022, our very first Catalyst, we received feedback that panels did not provide much value to the attendees. So in 2023, we opted for lightning talks, think TED style talks but focused on partnerships. We had two goals for them, provide a learning experience and provide some folks who have never spoken at a larger stage the opportunity to speak in front of their peers. In 2024, we have a couple of new features that will up level how attendees connect with each and increase their on the job performance. Whether you are an aspiring executive or a current executive you'll walk away for tools to help you increase your career and life impact. This coming week, Chris, Tai, Brittney (our conference leader) and I will be in Chicago to finalize the program and we'll share updates from the windy city. We have more interest from teams attending Catalyst (they are choosing to do their team offsite at the event) than the past two years. We also have interest from Founders, CEOs, CBOs and other non-partnerships execs. 3. Sidekick We all already know and use AI like Chatgpt, but Shopify's Sidekick is like a Chatgpt trained on your own data. That's like the difference between a CEO and a (very smart) janitor. Also, Sidekick has access to your store, so it can make changes to it (like creating a customer segment or discount).

This is John Fish:  He has ~1M on YouTube & a massive book club.  He skipped traditional VC and took investment in himself. --- Meet John Fish At 10, he was already coding his first app. By 16, he was working as an engineering intern at Shopify. For college he went to Harvard. But he wants to try to become the #1 creator on BookTube. Here's why that's an interesting decision: --- John has a serious love for reading. One that he's managed to parlay into a large (and growing) online business empire. It all started with his YouTube channel, which has almost attracted enough book lovers to earn him that coveted gold play button. They recently wrote a check to John to help accelerate growth across his entire enterprise. --- Here are 5 reasons why... 1. A Sizable (and Growing) Distribution Channel John has grown his YouTube channel to almost 1M subscribers and uses this for awareness and distribution. 2. Defensible Differentiation John doesn’t just review books, he dives deep into their themes using an analytical, yet approachable style that appeals to a wide audience. 3. Business Acumen John uses his tech background to run data analysis that helps him understand his audience better than anyone else. This helps him optimize his content strategy and diversify his revenue sources by layering on in-demand physical products and software tools. 4. Shopify is such a cool story because of the way their existence totally changed their own total addressable market. Shopify made going direct-to-consumer easy. It's not just the storefront bits - it's the app ecosystem. Shopify enabled companies like ShipBob to turn highly physical processes into a software abstraction, dramatically reducing the capital required to launch a real-world DTC business. AWS did the same for software. Twilio did the same for software/telephony interactions. There's no way to "size" the market for category definers like this before they happen... because their very presence creates new markets.

Example 1. A Convoy as a Distributed Team. There are two agents in this example: Alice and Bob. Bob wants to go home after a party, but doesn’t know the way. He does know that Alice knows the way and that her destination is not far from his home. So all Bob has to do is to follow Alice. But that may not be enough. For example, if Bob sees Alice going down lots of side streets, he may infer that Alice doesn’t really know her way and abandon the convoy, leaving Alice to worry about where she lost Bob, and circling back to try to find him. And if Bob makes a momentary wrong turn, Alice might conclude Bob now knows his way so she can abandon the convoy and leave him to find his own way. While she is in the convoy, Alice has to drive differently, adapting her own goals. ^ A seemingly simple joint-task, like driving to a place together, involves a complex level of co-ordination. Invisible unless observed actively. Now a round of applause to anyone, who ever worked in a project that required atleast 2 teams to work together, that success is hard earned! #devops #changemanagement

Thanks Shopify for another great year at Edition.dev. Definitely a lot discussed especially if you went to the individual presentations. Here are my top 3: 1️⃣ Built for Shopify - apps will get better visibility and promotion if they are Built for Shopify. I love this for #shopify but it will be interesting to see how this plays out for #shopifyplus. Not sure how some platforms will be able to embed the entire experience in the Admin 2️⃣ Improvements to Product API - merchandising is key for larger brands and the roll-out of category metafields and the product taxonomy (https://lnkd.in/gaY9yjS4) will be huge to make it easier to discover products but also for brands to merchandise their products 3️⃣ New Customer API that was part of 2024-01 release - imagine being able to have metafields in the customer object that product differentiated site experiences for that individual - 💥 personalization!! Now Shopify just let me bulk update customers millions at a time and I'm all in Curious what the top 3 where for others
