This context, in which the viewer, or analyst, is the person performing a (sometimes strenuous, physically and cognitively demanding) activity raises many challenges, such as: Design and technology challenges, such as how might we leverage emerging wearable technology such as AR glasses? How to design visualizations for such devices? How to consider the outdoor environment in the design of such interfaces? What should new technology support and enable? Interaction challenges, such as how to interact with visualizations in these non-typical office or lab environments? Can multi-modal approaches to interaction be leveraged and how? Perceptual and cognitive challenges, such as how might visualization be potentially distracting and negatively affecting people’s main focus of performing their activity? How might attention, perception and cognition be affected by fatigue, effort, and concentration? How do people perceive, interpret, and make decisions about data, under limited attentional capacity? Evaluation challenges, such as how to collect participant data? How to design studies while maintaining realism? What protocols, sensors and other study instruments are appropriate and need to be developed? What tasks need to be supported? Dear 4th-year Mechanical Engineering Students, I am an early career researcher and Assistant Professor in the MME Department at UWaterloo seeking an MASc student to begin their studies in Fall 2024/Winter 2025, focusing on experimental testing and finite element modelling of abrasive wear and erosion processes caused by solid particle impacts in ductile materials. Characterizing and modelling the erosion resistance of lightweight materials is important since this is normally an unwanted phenomenon (debris strikes, component wear, etc.), however, erosive processes like abrasive jet machining (AJM) can also be used constructively as precise, low-energy alternatives to existing manufacturing solutions, especially for microscopic etching and surface machining. The project will be co-supervised by me (https://lnkd.in/ga3z4U93) and Professor Marcello Papini at TMU (https://lnkd.in/e28CbjgJ), with full-time studies and degree conferral taking place at UWaterloo. Possible project topics include: 1) Simulating the development of a strain hardened layer which forms below an eroded surface by simulating micro- or nanoindentation in AHSS and/or aluminum alloys.  2) Training AI models to predict erosion rates and surface damage features (e.g., roughness, waviness) for different particle jet sizes, velocities, etc. 3) Simulating a mechanically mixed, composite layer containing embedded abrasive particles (e.g., alumina powder) from erosion in polymers or very soft materials (PMMA, PTFE, copper, etc.). Professor Papini is a renowned expert in the field of erosion. Among his many accomplishments, he held a Tier II Canada Research Chair position in Abrasive Jet Technology from 2006-2017.  The attached video shows some of our ongoing collaboration involving the simulation of micro scale impacts, surface damage mechanisms and erosion using LS-DYNA. 📢 Publication Alert! 📚 Pleased to share our recently published article entitled “Integrating Relational Values in Social Acceptance of Photovoltaic Energy Storage Systems: A Consumers' Perspective Assessment Using Structural Equation Modeling,” in the journal Energy (Q1, IF:9.0). This study explores consumer acceptance of photovoltaic (PV) energy storage systems, highlighting the importance of relational values. We surveyed 370 respondents to understand their preferences for PV energy storage over non-renewable options. Our findings show that awareness, beliefs, environmental knowledge, self-perception, and relational values positively influence acceptance, while cost has a negative impact. Notably, relational values can mitigate the negative effects of cost. These insights provide valuable information for energy policymakers and stakeholders, helping to regulate energy consumption by encouraging consumers to prioritize sustainable energy storage options. IRCHEP 1403 Iranian Conference on High Energy Physics Deciphering the Universe Ciphers School of Physics, IPM September 30th-October 2nd, 2024 (9-11 Mehr,1403)   IRCHEP 1403 is a conference on high energy physics to be held from September 30th to October 2nd, 2024. The conference gathers experts in high energy physics and cosmology to discuss recent advances and key developments in the field. IRCHEP 1403 will be held online. Reflecting on my experience at the Canadian Materials Science Conference (CMSC 2024) at the University of Alberta last week. I had the opportunity to attend various symposia and workshops. A highlight was James David Hogan's transformative workshop on academic career preparation, which provided a comprehensive roadmap for aspiring academics. Thank you James David Hogan. Here are some key takeaways from the symposium presentations: 1. Use simple language in presentations. 2. Make your presentation storytelling using ‘and,' for background 'but,' for the problem, and 'Therefore' for what you have done to solve the problem. 3. Use slides as support, not the main focus. 4. To minimize bullet points, Use high-resolution images from platforms like Unsplash, iStockphoto, and Pixabay. (all are free) 5.      Less slides, more impact. 6.      End with a clear next step. This innovative process removes copper and carbon impurities from molten steel, producing high-quality recycled steel and valuable by-products. Led by Professor Gisele Azimi, the study demonstrates the first successful electrochemical removal of copper from steel, achieving impurity levels below alloy thresholds. Congratulations to researchers from Max Planck Institute of Microstructure Physics, Max Planck – University of Toronto Centre for Neural Science and Technology, University of Toronto and Technische Universität Dresden for their recent publication!   The research group, led by Prof. Joyce Poon, exploited REGENHU’s melt electrowriting technology to fabricate titanium carbide-coated PCL scaffolds acting as bioactive interfaces to guide the growth of 3D neural circuits.   The fabricated structures were proven to have excellent biocompatibility and to enable optocapacitive neural stimulation, with spatially precise control over the photoinduced neural activity. As stated by the authors, the presented approach opens novel pathways for functional neural tissue engineering and the precise control and modulation of neural circuits in vitro and in vivo. I recall my first days at sharif, where our faculty had arranged a series of seminars on "introduction to electrical engineering" at which they tended to inspire the freshmen just admitted to the most prestigious technology institute in iran, with variety of options ahead of them. This program was held mainly due to the studies illustrating poor succession of our brilliant students compared to their potential and was mainly designed to push people towards more entrepreneurial approaches in their careers. Personally I believe this effort was too little too early at the time, since most of us had almost no experience with any amount of engineering and at the same time, we had not seen the necessity of such knowledge provided during those sessions. One of the most underrated quotes I kept with me from those times is still ringing a bell in my head everyday. I hereby translate peripherally "as engineers in an underdeveloped country, we have the luxury of predicting the future technology by looking at first world countries" which perhaps is one of the easiest ways to initiate entrepreneurship while tolerating mininmal amounts of risk and thereby generating wealth safe and sound. One can easily observe different types of business models already developed and come up with an idea to localize it and implement it at developing countries who are eager to leverage their technology. I wish in the pass of years, I and all the genuine engineers who sat alongside me, refuse to become normalized standard engineers at some corporation and use all of our capabilities and possible opportunities ahead of us.

We are thrilled to announce the recent appointments of ECE professors Amina Hussein and Cor-Paul Bezemer as Tier 2 Canada Research Chairs! Prof. Amina Hussein has been named the Tier 2 Canada Research Chair in Laser-Plasma Interactions. Hussein's research team at the University of Alberta is applying cutting-edge laser-based technologies to develop a novel suite of diagnostics for complex materials, with applications in additive manufacturing and sustainable agriculture. Using high-power laser systems, electrons can be propelled to high energies over a few centimetres of plasma, shrinking kilometre- scale particle accelerators to the table-top scale, and making them more accessible and affordable. Hussein’s team is also developing compact probes for environmental applications using high-speed and waste-free laser-based spectroscopic techniques. As a Canada Research Chair team, Hussein's team is working at the next frontier of laser-driven particle acceleration using high repetition rate laser systems, supporting rapid data acquisition for improved statistics and the implementation of Artificial Intelligence techniques for "smart" optimization of laser-matter interactions and high-stability sources. Prof. Cor-Paul Bezemer has been named the Tier 2 Canada Research Chair in Quality Assurance of Intelligent Systems. Intelligent systems contain artificial intelligence (AI) software components that allow them to respond to and learn from their environments. As more intelligent systems make their way into our daily lives, we become more dependent on their correctness, fairness and trustworthiness. While intelligent systems offer a vast range of opportunities, their development poses new challenges for software developers. One major challenge is that quality assurance (QA) is more complicated than traditional systems. During the QA process, software developers ensure that a system satisfies a set of predefined software requirements based on various software quality attributes. In his research, Dr. Bezemer focuses on how we can improve the quality assurance processes of intelligent systems by proposing novel QA techniques and tools.
