Happy is #WorldEnvironmentDay! Led by the United Nations Environment Programme, World Environment Day has been held annually since 1973 and is celebrated by millions of people across the world. Today we are sharing a study by BC Children's Hospital Research Institute investigator Dr. Tim Oberlander and his colleagues that investigates the influence of different types of urban and residential green spaces versus paved spaces on childhood development. Using the Early Development Instrument (EDI) questionnaire, the team found that early-life exposures to trees and grass were associated with increased EDI scores, while increased exposure to paved surfaces was associated with reduced EDI scores. “Living near green spaces may support better childhood development by reducing stress, encouraging physical activity and exploration, facilitating social contact, and reducing harmful environmental stressors such as excessive heat, noise, and air pollution,” says Dr. Oberlander. “Our findings point to a place where urban planning and child development meet, and highlights an urgent need to find ways to promote the creation and maintenance of urban green space.” Read the full story: bcchr.info/3yjlRtG BC Children's Hospital Foundation BC Children's Hospital, Vancouver Faculty of Medicine at the University of British Columbia #HealthyKids #ChildhoodDevelopment #UrbanPlanning

📢 The Canadian Knowledge Mobilization Forum 2024 (#CKF24) is just over a month away! Leading up to the event, we'll be sharing recordings and summaries from the most recent forum. 🎥 First up, we have the inspiring opening plenary! Our Co-creation Story: Knowledge Mobilization & Reconcilia(c)tion in Health Research  Keynote Speakers: Harlan Pruden and Travis Salway This presentation showcases three case studies of knowledge mobilization in Indigenous health research, particularly during the Covid-19 pandemic. The speakers emphasize a collaborative "Indigenous" Knowledge Translation (KT) model, where goals are co-created with communities, contrasting with the more traditional "integrative" KT approach. 🔹 Two-Spirit Dry Lab: The first case study features the work the speakers are doing as part of their Two-Spirit Dry Lab. 'Two-Spirit' refers to diverse gender and sexuality roles celebrated in many Indigenous cultures. 'Dry' refers to the idea that they work with data and do not get “their hands wet”. The Lab follows the principles of transdisciplinary collaboration and the Two-Eyed Seeing approach, which combines Indigenous and Western research methods. Work is achieved in a collaborative, non-hierarchical fashion and driven by consensus. 🔹 Covid-19 Language Guide: The second case study features a Covid-19 health research survey conducted during the pandemic and the resulting Covid-19 Language Guide. Inspired by earlier HIV research and informed by local demographics, the guide aims to avoid stigmatizing language in health communications. For example, using “transmission” instead of “infection” and “chronic conditions” instead of “risk” or “lifestyle factors.” The term “vulnerable population” was avoided as it implies inherent problems in a group without indicating responsible factors. 🔹 Indigenous KT Working Group: The third case study focuses on the work of the Indigenous KT Working Group in addressing vaccine hesitancy and information gaps in Indigenous communities. To overcome challenges like limited internet access and language barriers among elders, the group created posters and billboards with simple, illustrated messages. By emphasizing the importance of protecting others and featuring respected Indigenous and Metis doctors, they successfully reached underserved community members. These case studies highlight the power of co-created research and culturally sensitive communication. This new course aims to provide health promoters, and health professionals working in public health, community health, and at the local, provincial, and national levels, with a common understanding of the history and development of health promotion. It also provides an overview of theories and concepts integral to health promotion, and examples of how health promotion is practiced today. 📖 Following our recent OAG article on improving sepsis outcomes through increasing awareness and improving healthcare systems and protocols, we're sharing an insightful paper by Dr. François Lamontagne et al. that expands on this theme by discussing how integrating research into clinical practice can revolutionize Canada's healthcare system. 🔬 Inspired by the UK's successful NIHR model, this paper highlights key challenges in Canada: inefficient infrastructure, cultural separation between research and healthcare, and fragmented efforts. 🍁 Adopting a similar approach in Canada could enhance research efficiency, engage more healthcare workers, and ensure better coordination nationwide. Here are ways we could achieve this: 🔍 Adopt Models like the UK's Clinical Research Network: The UK's National Institute for Health Research has been pivotal in rapid research production and knowledge dissemination with its robust Clinical Research Network infrastructure. This model could be a blueprint for Canada to enhance our research productivity. 🔍 Address Inefficiencies and Fragmentation: Our current research infrastructure is plagued by inefficiencies and fragmentation, separating research from clinical practice. Streamlining processes and fostering integration can lead to significant improvements. 🔍 Foster Collaboration with Strong Political Will: Achieving a cohesive research environment requires both federal and provincial political commitment. By forging partnerships among health systems, research institutes, and organizations, we can drive meaningful change. 🔍 Conduct Thorough Analysis and Projections: A careful analysis of current costs and inefficiencies, alongside projections of potential returns on investment for a more efficient infrastructure, is crucial. Collaborative jurisdictions willing to trial new models are essential to initiate progress. 💡 The Path Forward: To address these challenges, a transformative shift is needed to integrate research seamlessly into clinical practice, mirroring successful models like the UK's NIHR.
