When I was at the SwitchON conference, I was asked how to establish an effective enterprise architectural governance practice. Here are the three main success factors: 1. Strong Executive Champion - In my area, we have made our enterprise architecture program, GO-ITS 200PRS, a standard. Our Chief CIO / CIOs are the standard owners. Any exception to EA governance requires C-level executive approval.  2. EA services must produce values while being flexible: The goal is to show the values by decreasing duplicate IT investments by promoting common solutions and enterprise pattern, eliminating IT investment risk by providing independent security / privacy / accessibilities impact assessment, and promoting technological innovation to the enterprise. 3. Increase project delivery experience among enterprise architecture reviewers. The Enterprise Architect must have hands-on expertise with implementation and maintain their knowledge current. It promotes confidence among the project delivery team, project architects, and business in the EA services. Feel free to share your ideas in the comments.

I've had the pleasure of moving inter-provincially twice in the last 3.5 years – first from Alberta to Manitoba, and recently from Manitoba to Saskatchewan. This spring MNP connected with nearly 300 municipal managers and executives to better understand how communities across Canada are thinking about using technology to deliver services to their citizens. A few things stood out to me: Nearly 75% of the municipalities that responded are focused on improving citizen experience and customer service but over half of all municipalities are concerned about having the financial and human resources required to achieve those improved outcomes. At the same time, less than half of the municipalities we connected with are considering process automation and digital self-service. While those thoughts may seem counter-intuitive, I think its because there has been a laundry list of stories in the news about large-scale transformations gone wrong, overwhelming noise about new technologies all drowning out the opportunity for practical solutions to make real improvements. Improving time of decision making, reducing compliance administration, increasing citizen satisfaction with services, and improving data collection and record keeping, doesn't have to require mega-million dollar custom software and hardware projects. It can begin with identifying the low-hanging fruit and using products like Microsoft Power Platform. Folks like Wendy Gnenz, CMC, CPA, CA, ICD.D, and Soumya Ghosh, and others at MNP have been able to help municipal leaders (and organizations of all sorts) navigate through the unprecedented noise level about technology and get to the business of improving outcomes for those you serve and increasing internal efficiency in the face of tight budgets and resource constraints.
