Takeaways from Day One at the Family Enterprise Canada Summit in Calgary Yesterday was a day filled with profound insights and inspiring moments! Starting with transitioning the family business, Dr. Moira Somers from Blackwood Family Enterprise Services shared the four stages of transition, reminding us that transitions challenge our fundamental sense of identity and can lead to mental depletion. As advisors, we must normalize and discuss the transition experience to better support our clients. Caroline Phaneuf Crysalia Patricia Saputo Anna Giampà, MBA, FEA guided us through an exercise on continuity during transitions. They emphasized the importance of having a clear target or "bullseye" during transition, what's the end goal? An enlightening interview followed, where Kelly Willis Green MBA, PCM interviewed Jim Hayhurst on "philanthropreneurism" reminding us that philanthropy and charitable giving aren't just for the elite. We can start with time, talent, and treasure. The day concluded with the talented and vulnerable Jessica Holmes sharing her story of overcoming depression. Jessica highlighted the power of our own breath reminding us that we can't think our way out of anxiety and it's ok to ask for help. 🇨🇦 Proud to be Canadian, but we need to talk about our future (how about this Tuesday in Toronto?) I love Canada and share its story wherever I go. Our pride should stem from where we're heading, and how we’re addressing our past. We have a lot to do, financially and socially. Also, everyone knows I’m an accountant so I spend money I have and invest money where the average weighted return is positive. So I’m confused. How can policymakers increase spending while decreasing future revenue? Yes, the current policy increases spending, and while raising capital gains taxes creates revenue short term, it's a short-sighted strategy. If we want to boost revenue, we need more profitable companies. Profitable companies pay higher wages, hire more employees, and those employees spend more. In 2023, corporate, personal taxes, and GST made up 78% of Canada’s revenue. This is a significant lever. So, why introduce policies that hinder company growth and expansion? And it’s not just about capital gains tax. There are multiple instances where policies target the very leaders who create jobs and profitable companies. And this isn’t a comment about the 1% paying too much, I believe those with success should bear a greater responsibility, however, we’re talking about what policies to create today to create more prosperity for everyone in Canada. A co-investor recently shared his frustration with me, saying he’s leaving Canada due to having tried to fight the changes in the past and these current changes are the icing on the cake. This entrepreneur, with his own successful exit, who has been reinvesting in Canadian startups, might stop supporting our economy. His direction has changed, and it’s concerning. When setting policies, whether on interest or tax rates, broad brush strokes with the right direction are crucial. If the direction is wrong, you not only lose the margin (the group of people who will make the differential decision based on the new information), but you also run the risk other drastic consequences. We must come together, find common ground, use our voices, and then act. Let’s ensure Canada’s tech sector thrives and secures our economic future. Talk about a whirlwind weekend.... Half was spent celebrating my daughters Sweet 16 and the other half was spent at the Monday Girl Summit delivering a Tax Workshop in partnership with TurboTax Canada. "You don't know what you don't know, and that's ok" is a statement that I often repeat not only to others but myself as well. This means having the courage to ask for help and guidance is key to getting where you want to go. Leave your ego at the door. This is my 3rd venture into owning a business. ❌ The first time, I learned that I loved wearing clothes but not selling them. ❌ The second time, I learned that I didn't want to only offer bookkeeping and tax services. ✅ In this third round, celebrating 6 years in a few months, I figured it out. I want to help others, like me, make the leap. I want to help them run their businesses efficiently, to implement solutions to grow and scale, and to educate & deliver the fundamental knowledge base that founders need to make strategic and operational business decisions. Attendees left the session saying it was the best learning they ever had on tax and with gratitude. I left the session feeling 1000% confident in the "problem I'm trying to solve" and further invested in the product that I am about to begin to develop. Over the years I have had to lean on experts where I was outside of my own expertise, certain areas of technology, communications and PR, legal and so on. Without doing so, I wouldn't feel as confident as I do today to extend my brand further and build. Hats off to all the incredible founders who spent their weekend listening, absorbing, and most importantly asking questions. Happy mom and happy "kid" on this Monday morning.
