🚀 Big milestone alert! 🚀 Yesterday, Maritime Launch Services announced that the company received a term sheet for a $12.9 million contribution from the Government of Canada under the Strategic Innovation Fund (SIF). The global demand for satellite services, such as communications, earth observation, and navigation, is rapidly increasing. Canada is ready to support this demand with the most competitive location in North America - right here, in rural Nova Scotia. Developing a commercial spaceport in Canada stimulates economic growth and job creation in high-tech industries. It will foster innovation and position Canada as a key player in the global space economy, attracting investments and partnerships from around the world. It's a no-brainer. Great to see the Government of Canada join with the Government of Nova Scotia to provide meaningful support for commercial launch from Nova Scotia. SIF will help Maritime Launch prepare the site of Spaceport Nova Scotia for Canada's first Orbital launch in 2025. Mark your calendars! 🚀 https://lnkd.in/eBRxyaKq

Earlier this week the Canada Electrcity Advisory Council tabled its much anticipated report about the future direction of Canada’s electricity systems. Importantly the report underscores the urgent need for governments, indigenous communities and the private sector to double down and focus on growing Canada’s electrcity supply for the benefit of future generations. Access to clean, affordable and reliable electrcity are qualities that for decades have been a hallmark of Canada’s attractiveness as a location for industrial investment. We need to stay the course so that Canadians can grow their competitive advantage and not lose market share. The Business Council of Canada continues to call on policy makers from across all levels of government to work together and develop a national vision for how best to grow Canada’s clean electrcity supply. #cdnpoli #netzero

Insightful analysis Institute for Research on Public Policy (IRPP). One topic absent from the productivity debate-the importance of good governance. Efficient, transparent, legitimate decision making both as a federation and as individual governments is essential to support a positive investment climate and productivity. It would appear the Phoenix pay system, passport backlogs, return to office challenges and the ArriveCan fiasco are seen as disconnected and limited to boring inside government administration issues rather than a barrier to Canada’s productivity agenda. Time to reframe.

There's a lucrative black market in #lobster in #Canada, sources tell Undercurrent News, that's making it difficult for Fisheries and Oceans Canada / Pêches et Océans Canada managers who depend on landings and sales records to assess the health of the stocks and determine fishing rules. Some suggest a dockside monitoring program could work, while others say logistically it would be onerous. More details in this story: https://lnkd.in/em_SdA6U

A new report from Energy Futures examines what is required for B.C. to achieve its mandated ZEV sales target of 90% in 2030 and 100% in 2035. The report finds there are significant public charging infrastructure and electricity generation gaps that need to be closed if the government's targets are to be achieved. B.C. is planning on building 10,000 public chargers by 2030, 30,000 less than what is required to support an increasingly electrified fleet. Powering this infrastructure depends on an additional 2,700 GWh of electricity generation capacity. Automakers are committed to helping the provincial government move to a lower carbon economy and increase the number of ZEVs on B.C.'s roads. There are now over 80 ZEV models available in every size and vehicle segment with an additional 40 models expected this year. But achieving these ambitious sales targets depends on stronger consumer support in the form of consumer financial and non-financial incentives, charging infrastructure, grid investments, and education. Did you hear about this? Yesterday was an important day for communicating climate impacts to Canadians and the pressing need to improve our collective resilience. 🇨🇦 needs to play offence (reduce emissions) and defence (adapt) to climate change. Climate scientists at Environment and Climate Change Canada piloted its rapid extreme weather event attribution system - a first of its kind for 🇨🇦 - to reveal how human-induced climate change made the heat waves much more likely that were experienced from the Atlantic region across to Ontario in June. More verifying data makes inaction harder to justify. This is why we’re working day-in and day-out at Insurance Bureau of Canada and Climate Proof Canada to drive rapid tangible progress on the National Adaptation Strategy through a whole-of-society approach. Thank you to the often unsung team driving this work forward within government: Joanna Dafoe, Jennifer Lash, Jeff MacDonald, Laniel Bateman and others.

The big news out of today's Electricity Advisory Council report is that federal electricity policy needs to re-balance to support smart energy demand (as well as clean energy supply) Read the highlights for energy efficiency and smart demand management here. https://lnkd.in/epE845my

The transition to renewable energy is being led by Indigenous communities, with more than 200 medium to large renewable energy projects with Indigenous involvement. But there's no mention of the critical need for the principle of equity to inform the needed change - so we are reminded of Sacred Earth Solar’s “Just Transition Guide” - which cautions that “it is essential that we are critical and aware of the impacts of clean energy so we do not replicate the same system of harms that have been perpetuated from the previous energy era.” New clean electricity regulations with a goal of 100 per cent zero-emissions electricity by 2035 are expected to be finalized in 2024 in Canada. Equity commitments and strong regulations without loopholes for more fossil fuel development are both essential to delivering on our shared renewable potential !

Municipalities cannot tackle 21st century challenges with a 19th century toolkit. Simply put. That's why the Federation of Canadian Municipalities has been undertaking a campaign over the last year to get federal and provincial governments to think about how municipal revenue tools can be better matched with local service responsibilities. At last week's Annual Conference, FCM took that campaign to the next level with a detailed discussion paper of how this mismatch impacts the quality of life of Canadians and, more importantly, how all orders of government can work together to fix it. As the paper shows, property taxes provide a reliable base of funding for some services, but its utility gets stretched when factoring in the full scope of service downloading. As the most collaborative order of government, municipalities require a modern fiscal framework to support their communities - and a framework that is backed by partnership with the feds and provinces. Canadians are struggling right now, so this paper could not come sooner. An intergovernmental partnership on fiscal reform is something the country needs to help get it back on track. 📣 The Feds just popped the news about another $89 million for conservation and "greenhouse gas emissions reduction projects". Minister Steven Guilbeault announced 10 projects through the Nature Smart Climate Solutions Fund, focusing on preserving carbon-rich ecosystems across six provinces. Big investments include $37 million for BC Parks Foundation, $8 million for the Nature Trust of British Columbia, and over $4 million for the Nuxalk Nation, enhancing protected areas and benefiting species at risk. While this is great news, it shines even more light on why we need a strong Nature Accountability Act. The tabled Act is weak and lacks the teeth to hold the feds accountable on progress and reporting -- something that will ultimately allow us to have major funding events like these to be better directed under our GBF commitments. #30x30 #Biodiversity #Stewardship #conservation https://lnkd.in/gk2tGY78

Here is my March 8 blog calling for the Federal Budget to face up to a "lost decade" for Canadian prosperity: "Young people entering the workforce today face the prospect of 40 years of near-stagnant growth in average real per capita incomes. The OECD projects Canada will be the worst performing economy out of 38 advanced countries over 2020-30 and 2030-60, with the lowest growth in real GDP per capita. The OECD forecasts Canada will achieve growth in real GDP per capita of just 0.7% per annum over 2020-30. However, the latest data to 2023 - with GDP per capita in outright decline - indicate Canada is not even on track to deliver that dismal outcome. With the 2024 budget due on April 16, we encourage the federal government to face up to the fundamental reality that for the average Canadian their slice of economic pie is shrinking. Real GDP per capita – a key metric of a country’s prosperity – is no higher than in 2014. The private sector is in retreat and the economy is firing on only one cylinder, government spending, which is not a sustainable path to prosperity. Only once these problems are acknowledged can they start to be addressed through tax, regulatory and structural reforms to revive and invigorate Canada’s private sector economy." It was a pleasure for Habitat GTA and Habitat for Humanity Canada to meet today with a number of Federal Government MPs, Majid Jowhari, Ryan Turnbull, Chad Collins & Peter Fragiskatos. We greatly appreciated the opportunity to explore further how we can assist the government & continue to contribute to meeting the #affordablehousing challenges faced by Canadians in the GTA and across Canada. One particular recommendation that we make is for the federal & provincial governments is to take the next step on addressing housing affordability by extending the HST/GST exemption now in place for purpose-built rental, housing co-ops & student housing, to also include non-profit affordable ownership homes delivered by organizations like ours. In the GTA the HST/GST is adding an average of $80,000 per home to the price that Habitat GTA incurs to deliver urgently needed new affordable ownership homes. For every 100 homes that we deliver, Habitat GTA could provide 13 more if we were not paying this expense.

FULL VIDEO - Part 2 - Summerside adds an AI-powered microgrid, solar, and batteries to their local electricity grid and goes from ZERO to 62% renewable energy over the year leading Cities across Canada. In Part 1 they developed their smart grid, built a small wind farm in the city and helped residents replace oil furnaces with electric, energy-storing furnaces and water heaters to flatten the curve on their wind power. The innovation here is happening in a small City that had virtually no electricity generation and now generates 62% from renewable energy locally. #solar #windpower #renewableenergy #energytransition #climateaction #green #electricity #energy #greenenergy #sustainability #resilience City of Summerside Kent Rathwell Sandra Moore, GCB.D Canadian Renewable Energy Association (CanREA) SkyFire Energy Inc Kuby Renewable Energy C40 Cities Global Covenant of Mayors for Climate and Energy in Canada Gregor Robertson Seth Schultz Federation of Canadian MunicipalitiesGavin Mooney Russ Bates The Energy Mix Mitchell Beer NICO JOHNSON 🎙️UN Environment Programme Lois Corbett Dan Kutcher Solar Alberta
