Thrilled to announce some critical new supporters for Varme Energy's flagship Edmonton project today. We've added Canada Growth Fund and Gibson Energy as project investors, with Gibson also providing land & operations services to the asset. Canada Growth Fund has stepped up with a 200,000 tonne per year carbon credit offtake agreement on a 15 year term, fundamentally de-risking our projects carbon economics. My favourite feature of our CCO with CGF is that they've enabled us to pull out up to 100,000 tonnes per year of our bio-energy carbon capture and storage credits (BECCS). These removals credits are the most in-demand commodity we sell, and small volume global prices for BECCS have been $200-300/tonne+. A full purchase agreement with an ability to chase prices for partial volumes is very project friendly. Today's announcement sets the foundation for our first asset. While CDN has a carbon tax and has been convinced to keep its oil and gas resources in the ground by US based climate NGOs, & buys wind/solar/EVs/heatpumps from China, the US in direct contrast has no carbon tax & became the largest exporter of oil and gas in the world in 2023. And most recently has enacted tariffs on goods from China. Is it any wonder our currency is being devalued?

100% concur with Diego Mandelbaum on this issue. A recurring problem is that policy makers have a blind spot on thermal energy. They wrongly assume that electricity policy is energy policy and vice versa. This myopia results not only in higher consumer costs but inferior capital deployment and deleterious environmental outcomes. We need to break the fever of “electrify everything” through ardent advocacy and education.

New op-ed from me 👇 in the Globe on the news that Canada's largest ever carbon capture project was just halted. Let this serve as a wake-up call that we don't yet have the policy in place to unlock deep decarbonization across heavy industry (which is about half of Canada's emissions). The key missing piece is to give firms confidence that the industrial carbon pricing system will work as intended by offering insurance in the form of carbon contracts for difference (CCfDS). CCfDs are wonky but they are the key to attracting low carbon-capital and accelerating decarbonization. Federal and provincial governments will need to work together to bring them to life. https://lnkd.in/gFpHQdJJ

The hydrogen export market represents a $2 trillion to $12 trillion opportunity, one that Canada is set to have a piece of. Because of Alberta’s expertise with energy products and a slew of investments to the region, it’s looking like Alberta has every ingredient needed to seize this opportunity. But our journey to decarbonization is not without bumps on the road. From complex regulatory processes to long wait times for permits, alignment is still needed in key areas to ensure we do not lose out on this era-defining industry. I had no idea that the cost/benefit and climate impact analysis of heat pumps is so complicated, but Jamie Wong has put in the huge amount of work it takes to do it right. There's A LOT MORE than meets the eye beyond the simple UI. Advising anyone who is involved with electrification of house heating/cooling (and not necessarily Canadian) to use the tool, read the source code, and share this with your networks of built environment nerds! This project or talking to Jamie Wong about it could be useful to a variety of stakeholders: - Policymakers / think tanks who want to promote deployment of heat pumps - Companies that make heat pumps and might consider adopting this tool to help identify the best target customers - Investors who invest in heat pump companies and want to assess the credibility of their sales forecasts - Etc.

With gigawatts of energy storage capacity slated to be built across Canada in the next few years, it's success could also be a problem... As energy storage becomes more affordable and the demand for it increases, there's an important question to ask: Can construction keep up? Typical foundation solutions for BESS can be slow to install and result in significant disruption to the environment. Our team has consistently seen helical pile foundations expedite timelines and secure greater overall economy for large-scale energy projects. Plus, they have a low impact on the environment and greatly reduce carbon emissions associated with the foundation. Canada needs to rapidly build our energy storage capabilities if we're going to deliver clean, reliable, and efficient power for the future. The result of heat pumps working in cold weather really surprised me as it has not been observed in existing heat pumps. Typically, when temperatures get below -18 heat pumps are no more efficient than resistance heating. As temperatures can get much colder in parts of Canada relative to Western Europe, backup sources will play a greater role.

There has been a collective delusion amongst many climate policymakers in Canada that the country could decarbonize using its ‘massive’ competitive advantage in low carbon electricity. That delusion must come to an end. Electricity is 17% of Canada’s energy consumption. And we will never again see the massive hydropower buildout that occurred in the second half of the 20th century. Not only is Quebec out of power but BC is, YTD, importing double the amount of power it imported last year – which totalled 20% of consumption (net). This doesn’t even address the fact provinces like Alberta and Saskatchewan have few renewable, dispatchable electricity options. In Alberta, electricity is 7% - yes 7% - of provincial electricity consumption. The idea that the province would electrify thermal energy loads, equal to about 80% of consumption and most of them steam, is ridiculous. Are we going to electrify the country using power from gas generation in the US? Dumb. Does this mean giving up on climate mitigation? Absolutely not. But it does require a pragmatic approach to meet climate goals. There is no way Canada can meet these goals without embracing the decarbonization model of other northern countries – namely Sweden, Finland, and Denmark – where biomass meets 34-40% of energy supply, district heating systems are ubiquitous, and there has been an embrace of BECCS – bioenergy with CCS – to generate the carbon dioxide removals necessary to address ‘high cost-to-abate’ emissions. Fortunately we have the forest resources to do this and, frankly, the adaptation imperative to actively managing our forests to prevent massive carbon releases from wildfires. Enough with the electrification ideology. If climate change activists actually want to see goals realized, they must live in reality and look to proven approaches that are affordable and accelerate economic development.
