A couple of weeks ago I commented on a post about Unlimited / Open / Flexible time off. This is what I shared: I designed and led the launch of “Open Time Off” at my former company. We had a minimum expectation of 2 weeks which we monitored quarterly to ensure leaders were aware and asking questions when someone wasn’t taking time off. I shared openly with our employees that I aimed to take at least 4 weeks off per year. Our CEO shared photos of his family vacations during our town halls. Done right, flexible or open time off is a valuable benefit to employees and the company. I also made a comment on another post about other flexible work programs we launched. This is what I shared: We launched Summer Fridays a couple of years ago. The company shut down every Friday in July. So basically a 4 day work week all of July. It was one of our most popular programs for exactly the reasons you list. I’d like to see more companies embrace these types of strategies. Often they are win win for the business and the employee. Both comments received a lot of likes from a variety of individuals... employees I've worked with in the past, 2nd and 3rd degree connections (HR leaders, business owners, CEOs, individual contributors) My belief is this. Treat employees as the professionals they are and we/the company hire them to be. Provide flexibility to accommodate life and recognize that time off is necessary for both the business and the employee to prosper. Healthy, happy, refreshed and engaged employees show up better for your customers, handle escalations easier, push themselves harder. Having a flexible time off policy just makes business sense. It's 1535% more expensive to wait for candidates to apply than to proactively reach out using automation. If you're looking to cut costs, consider strategically reaching out to qualified candidates in your database before posting on job boards.

Hiring - it doesn't have to be a game of Russian roulette. Yet, so many managers throw the dice, hoping to land that ideal hire. Truth? It's less about luck and more about strategy. Here's my hiring playbook: 1) Define the role - Be crystal clear about the responsibilities, necessary skills, and cultural fit. 2) Look beyond the resume - A resume tells you what they've done, not what they can do. 3) Behavioral questions are key - Past behavior is the best predictor of future performance. 4) Involve the team - They've got to work with the new hire, so their input is invaluable. 5) Trust your gut - Data is important, but never underestimate your instincts. 6) Utilize AI tools such as jobworx.ai - the Hiring Management Dashboard is a great help! Hire for potential, train for skill, and support with culture. And remember, a great hire can propel a team to new heights; a poor one can be a costly misstep. Choose wisely. Things that make me nervous in the land of AI HR tech that are here or coming soon, based on demos I’ve seen👇 ➡ AI sourcing, assessing, AND scheduling: we will have platforms that find talent on the open market, initiate outreach, respond to outreach, schedule and host a video meeting via an AI avatar, assess on the profile + first video call - then schedule them with the human interview panel ➡ AI job leveling: we will have platforms that create leveling matrices by function, tailored to the company, then do an auto first-pass leveling by function ➡ AI skill quantification & tailored AI learning plans: we will have platforms that - from those AI matrices - take a look at the talent we have and quantify their functional skill levels (eg. 120/200 in Machine Learning for SWE3) then auto curate learning plans in an LMS to build skills to where they need to be ➡ AI performance & engagement: we’ll have platforms that assess real time engagement and performance based on dialogue happening in slack, email, zoom, GitHub, etc. No more lagging structured questions? ➡ AI manager nudges: we will have platforms that not only give on-demand AI coaching to managers but also prompt them without being asked based on contextual awareness of what is going on in the team, regardless if the manager knows or not Honestly scary. We're trying to make #FeedbackFriday a 𝘵𝘩𝘪𝘯𝘨 at Help Scout. You can't become a culture of feedback if you don't actually practice it regularly! I know it can be overwhelming to think of feedback for someone on the spot, without any guidance or context. So I really love that Lattice, our tool for all things performance management, provides meaningful prompts to solicit feedback from anyone at the company, at any time. A few of the built-in examples: 🌈 What is something I can start or stop doing to be more effective in my role? 🌈 From a recent project, meeting, etc... what is a strength and a focus area for this person to work more effectively? 🌈 On a scale of 1-10, how would you rate my ability to communicate and collaborate? Pondering costs vs investments. In so many conversations the past few weeks folks have talked about how much time is wasted in useless meetings. I'm always shocked to learn who was in these meetings and to estimate the opportunity cost that is wasted. But it happens every day - multiple times per day! Yet, when it come time to discuss growing and evolving the humans of an organization so they can work better together - to achieve more and feel good about their contributions...that is seen as a cost to contain. Time and money are seen as constrained expenses. But here is the reality, productivity is about people. If you want to make your organization function better, invest in your people. It is past time we stop thinking about the humans in your organization as a cost. Someone once told me, do not invest what you cannot afford to lose. I'm in the question, what are you losing by not investing. Invest in your people.
