Our new publication in Transportation Research Part A, with TMU SURP graduate Sarah Giacomantonio & Léa Ravensbergen from McMaster University, shows that gender identities intersect with age, employment, family structure, when explaining #women 's #cycling behaviour. "There is no one women's experience". The paper emphasizes the importance of intersectional analysis in quantitative transportation research, going beyond the simplistic male/female or men/women binaries. Higher Ed institutions in Canada are mandated by court settlements to have "Diversity, Equity and Inclusion" plans. Yet most are performative Bullshit. Why?👇 Most universities have a lack of 'diversity' at Executive levels. Princeton Philosophy Professor Harry Frankfurt distinguished bullshitting from lying, noting that a liar is aware of the truth but deliberately sets out to subvert it. In contrast, a bullshitter may not care at all about the truth and can either tell the truth or lie, depending on what serves their purpose at the moment. Thus, the danger of bullshit is that it can lead to a corrosion of the very concept of truth, as it promotes a culture where the distinction between truth and falsity becomes increasingly irrelevant. The image below is comprised of some data from a peer-reviewed paper published in 2021 by Wendy Cukier and colleagues. Cukier, W., Adamu, P., Wall-Andrews, C., & Elmi, M. (2021). Racialized leaders leading Canadian universities. Educational Management Administration & Leadership, 49(4), 565-583. (link in comments) There is a full table in the paper listing all universities in Canada and their leadership 'diversity' ... or more accurately... lack of diversity. Lack of representative composition. Their research compiled data and profiles from all public universities in Canada and "all 324 listed senior university leaders, including provosts, vice- (or assistant/associate) provosts, presidents, and vice-presidents." The image below includes screen captures from that table of some of the institutions in British Columbia where I live. A similar picture exists across the country. And, curiously, almost 25% of those who are identified as 'racialized' in these senior leadership roles: "were in roles where the word “diversity,” “equity,” or “international” appeared in their title." From the paper: "In terms of Indigenous representation, only three universities had Indigenous leadership: the University of Manitoba (16.7%), Memorial University of Newfoundland (16.7%), and the First Nations University of Canada, which had exclusively Indigenous leadership (100%)." Yet, "...most recent census data, racialized people comprise 22.3% of the Canadian population (Statistics Canada, 2016)." Thus, the composition of Senior Leadership at universities across Canada isn't even close to representative - let alone "diverse" "equitable" or "inclusive". At least by the evidence in this particular context (and, yes, a relatively small dataset). However, if we were to map where the majority of major decisions get made in the operations of public universities - would it most likely be with these 320 (or so) senior executive members? I seem to remember a phrase I learned as a kid... something like "walking the talk..." If public institutions of higher learning are truly committed to 'diversity' 'inclusion' and 'equity' - then why not start at the top? What do you think?

The Essential Elements of an Effective Work Study Website Before you take your summer break, be sure to assess your institution’s approach to promoting your work study program. Work study programs are crucial in providing financial assistance to students helping them cover tuition, fees, and other educational expenses. This assistance reduces their reliance on loans and minimizes debt. For low-income students, these programs are particularly important as they provide the financial security needed so they can focus more on their studies and less on financial concerns. Unfortunately, many low-income students are unaware of the existence of work-study programs or the advantages of working on campus compared to off-campus job opportunities. As a result, these programs fail to reach all the students who would benefit from them. To ensure that students with unmet financial needs are fully informed about the program and its potential impact on their financial and academic success, it is essential to review five key elements of work-study websites on an annual basis. It is time Nova Scotia passes Real Property Act (amendment) Bill 296 - this act would prevent restrictive covenant - on food or medicine. What is restrictive convenant? It lets a land owner dicatate what can be done on the land to the next owner who buys it. Companies like Loblaws or Sobeys - who own land - when they close a store and sell can put a restrictive convenant - preventing the next owner from allowing a the sale of food or pharmaceuticals on that land. Why - prevent competition. It is time every Nova Scotia lobby their Provincial MLA to pass Bill 296. N.S. saw highest rates of poverty, food insecurity among provinces in 2022. One way to stop this - end restrictive convanent -on food and drugs. It is time those concerned land use and community health rally for change Sara FL Kirk Daniel Rainham and all land use planners Licensed Professional Planners Association of Nova Scotia (LPPANS) get organized and take back control on land use zoning - that makes sustainable communities.

I really liked this new Canadian book for teacher educators - Professional Ethics and Law in Education: A Canadian Guidebook by Bruce Maxwell, Dianne Gereluk and Christopher Martin. It does something special by integrating legal examples alongside philosophical tools designed to enhance, and challenge, beginning teachers’ professional judgement, and with care for balancing the conceptual and practical. Research, innovation and talent are the pillars of our future wellbeing and prosperity. For this reason, we can be very thankful for the significant measures to support science and researchers in Canada’s Budget 2024. By investing in research, we are making sure we have the talent and ideas to implement future growth strategies and answer the various challenges we may face. For this reason when you hear the word "science", it is not solely about universities. It is about our society's ability to build the future instead of being overwhelmed by it. Many of the budget measures (1) echo the recommendations of our Report of the Advisory Panel on the Federal Research Support System(2) (mandated in 2022 by François-Philippe Champagne and Jean-Yves Duclos).
