January 24, 2024: Student Suggests Umbrella Approach to Health Care Had the opportunity to speak with Bob Bellacicco at CTV news related to the approaches to improving and advancing the health care system. “If you focus on multiple things at once you're going to actually have the full umbrella approach to health care and I think that's what we need right now.” If we focus solely on one aspect of health care, other parts will falter. It is important to look at the bigger picture (health care as a whole). Just like an umbrella, if we only have one part of the umbrella up and working, we won’t be covered fully by the rain or whatever else comes our way; however, if all aspects are looked at and all parts are there, then we will be covered, happier, and can achieve optimal health outcomes. One can look at the umbrella (health care and health care systems) as having many components, represented by each panel (leadership and governance, finances, healthcare workforce, health care products and resources, healthcare infrastructure and service delivery, and health information systems). Without having all of these collectively in seam with each other, and without intersectoral collaboration and vested interest into a holistic, “umbrella” approach to care, improvement to existing systems will not occur. https://lnkd.in/edq7iHmY

The challenges facing the Canadian healthcare system are complex and multifaceted. The system needs higher quality, actionable data that tracks health outcomes and system performance on provincial and national levels. A population-based cohort study led by Angriman et al. in Ontario revealed that a whopping 10.4% of sepsis survivors experience major cardiovascular events during follow-up. 🏥 This eye-opening finding underscores the critical importance of prioritizing cardiovascular care for individuals who have survived sepsis. Our team of researchers, Black community partners, policy makers (e.g. Justice Canada, PHAC, WAGE) and community members received $2,500,000 from the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada to "Transform the Lives of Black Children and Youth in Canada". This is most likely the largest tri-council research grant for Black communities in Canada. Our project will facilitate a national research network, informed by critical race theory and intersectional theory, to meet three broad objectives addressing the needs and issues of Black children and youths (0 to 24 years) in Canada, as follows: --- Co-create knowledge and diverse solutions/interventions to address this group's overrepresentation in the CJ and CW systems, their poor educational outcomes, and settlement issues---via participatory action research (including a national survey, interviews, focus groups and intervention research) --- Create an interdisciplinary, intersectoral, and bilingual network, centre, and knowledge hub to mobilize evidence to improve this group's well-being and build capacity---by engaging researchers, trainees, policymakers, Black communities, and service providers across Canada. --- Train students and postdoctoral (PDF) researchers, including Black youths---facilitating their transition to academic and non-academic workplace settings. But I must say, it's not surprising that #access based on #province still remains an issue throughout Canada ! What I didn't expect was for it to be a stronger determinant than the typical #socialdeterminantsofhealth including #income , #education , #race , #immigrationstatus or the #rurality of where you live .

A McMaster University Department of Pediatrics study, published in JAMA Pediatrics this month, uncovers a critical concern for Ontario's youth: elevated long-term health risks associated with hypertension.      According to Dr. Rahul Chanchlani, lead researcher and pediatric nephrologist at McMaster Children's Hospital - Hamilton Health Sciences, "This is just one of many steps needed to improve blood pressure screening in Canadian children."      Dr. Chanchlani’s interdisciplinary team analyzed Ontario health records spanning three decades. The findings are stark—children diagnosed with hypertension face a twofold increase in the likelihood of experiencing major cardiac events such as stroke and heart attack. This insightful article from Dr. Edward Les, speaks the realities for nurses, i.e., "let nurses be nurses," and be in control of their practice. Versus letting a "tranche of ill-informed government enabled administrators" and policy-analysts with no healthcare training nor background making the "policies" for nurses and the public, armed only with an MBA or PhDs. But were are the nurses with PhDs, Master Degrees and NPs making up the, for example, the Health Professions Advisory Council (HPAC) whose mandate is to "ensure the public protection, quality of care and accountability in the provision of professional health services." But in Winnipeg, the HPAC is currently comprised of seasoned civil-servants and lawyers, who in our opinion, are "ill-informed" of the real problems of healthcare in Manitoba. And no public representation with the healthcare background nor experience leading this HPAC Committee? It was a great learning opportunity to attend the 2024 Manion Lecture organized by Canada School of Public Service | École de la fonction publique du Canada and learn from Alika Lafontaine and the diverse perspectives of the panelists Zayna Khayat, Ph.D. Onye Nnorom Doug Manion Cameron Love Key themes identified are as follows: 1. Healthcare Crisis ⭐ The Canadian healthcare system is built on "weight of the past, push of the present and pull of the future ⭐ Healthcare in Canada is finally seeing the benefits of AI shaping up but limited only to the use of AI in software ⭐ Emergency Departments across Canada are facing capacity issues and is taking the brunt of patients not finding care outside the hospital, in primary care or even as part of the communities ⭐ Current standpoint of the primary care is that, earlier patients were losing primary care doctors due to their retirement but not it's also because of clinics shutting down 2. Canadian Healthcare System Vs US Healthcare System ⭐ Canadian healthcare system still has an upper hand over the US healthcare system due to 5% of Canadians VS 3% of US citizens not having access to primary care doctors, when compared based on population percentage, Canada is still doing better, given the ideal balance of public private healthcare system in Canada 3. Discussion on healthcare crisis: Canadian healthcare system is on fire, as Canadians, should we run and go to the US, should we opt in for private clinics or should we bake cookies? 😂 ⭐ Canadians are not as angry as they should be, they should become the owners of the public healthcare system and demand to pay taxes for results and not for procedures ⭐️Whenever Canadian healthcare system is in crisis, Canada commissions a study- we must stop commissioning studies and invest in more tactical steps 4. Indigenous Health ⭐ Indigenous communities have been at the forefront of providing community care in Canada unlike other communities ⭐ Racism towards patients from marginalized population adds complexity and tends to lead towards worst outcomes ⭐ A black lady if complains of pain is trusted less than patients from non-marginalized population groups ⭐ Indigenous folks experience problems in patient services due to biases with healthcare practitioners 5. Why are all actions failing? ⭐ Challenge of being a researcher, physician and an advocate is that, everyone is waiting to be told what the problem is when the problem is clear and everyone should action against it and not only advocate ⭐ All actions that are being taken at the provincial and territorial level are in isolation and will always fail 5. Message of hope ⭐ Public service will become a large part to bring change in the Canadian Healthcare System ⭐️We are all connected, just like the healthcare system of Canada

APEX Partnering with the University of Ottawa (University of Ottawa ) on the 7th Executive Work and Health Study (EWHS) APEX has been studying the health and wellbeing of executives within the federal public service since 1997. The EWHS is a longitudinal population-based study built on significant participation levels and decades of research. The EWHS is unique to APEX and looks at the underlying determinants of workplace health and the pathways of causality. The emphasis is on the interaction between factors that combine to increase risk of individual and organizational health outcomes along with those factors that diminish those risks. This type of modeling shows how the work environment has a greater impact on health outcomes than do the individual lifestyle factors that are usually associated with specific illnesses. This is a population health approach which does not focus on individuals or disease but on health outcomes. APEX will launch its 7th Executive Work and Health Study (2024 EWHS) with the University of Ottawa by directly mailing a census style survey to each executive on May 27th. The EWHS will be conducted online by the University of Ottawa, and the Study’s Principal Investigator is Dr. Wayne Corneil (Wayne Corneil). APEX’s goal is to improve organizational health outcomes and in turn those of executives resulting in higher productivity and innovation in government operations, and program and service delivery for Canada. APEX is a catalyst and strives to strengthen collective understanding, amplify opportunities, share challenges, and advance concrete actions for better health outcomes for all. #Executives across the #GC - mark your calendars for May 27th and share your lived experiences.

🌟 Daily Dose of Health Insights July 06🌟 🔹 Today's Highlight: SOGC Calls for National Framework to Address Maternal Mental Health and Mortality in Canada "The Society of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists of Canada (SOGC) highlights that research from the United States indicates maternal mental health conditions are a leading cause of pregnancy-related deaths, with over 80% of these deaths deemed preventable by the CDC. Dr. Lynn Murphy-Kaulbeck, SOGC president, notes that a 2022 study found around 25% of women experience depression or anxiety during or after pregnancy, but only about 15% seek services. Barriers include stigma and lack of resources, with wait times for mental health services ranging from one to twelve months. Canada lacks a national system to track maternal deaths and severe complications, prompting the SOGC to call for a standardized framework for data collection and surveillance. The federal government is urged to lead efforts in assisting provinces and territories to standardize and share detailed maternal health data. Current data collection methods are inconsistent across provinces, hampering efforts to identify and address maternal health issues. Murphy-Kaulbeck praises the U.K. for its comprehensive maternal mortality review system, noting Canada’s need for similar detailed data to devise effective prevention strategies.
