🚨 Enough is enough: Time for Action! The recent arrest of individuals connected to over 100 thefts at LCBO stores highlights a growing concern for public safety and the significant financial toll on taxpayers. It's time to say enough is enough. The Guelph Police's investigation into these robberies, where hundreds of thousands of dollars' worth of liquor were stolen, underscores the severity of the issue. These criminals not only pose a danger to our communities but also drain valuable resources from law enforcement agencies. Sunday's events in St. Catharines serve as a reminder of the brazenness of these criminals. Waking up to find two men sleeping in a stolen car is alarming enough, but their subsequent attempt to evade police by ramming into patrol cars is simply unacceptable. Thanks to the swift and decisive action of law enforcement, the suspects were apprehended. However, the fact that one of them, a 27-year-old, faces dangerous driving charges and has outstanding warrants in multiple jurisdictions is deeply troubling. This incident should serve as a wake-up call for all of us. We cannot turn a blind eye to the escalating crime rates and the impact they have on our communities. Each theft not only jeopardizes public safety but also comes with a hefty price tag for taxpayers, with millions of dollars spent annually on investigations and legal proceedings. As concerned citizens, it's imperative that we support law enforcement efforts and advocate for measures to address the root causes of these crimes. One such measure is implementing Identity Verification Access Control (IVAC) solutions, which have been proven to reduce crime by up to 95%. Whether it's improving security measures, implementing stricter penalties for offenders, or investing in community initiatives, we must take a stand against criminal activity. Let's come together as a community to say enough is enough. It’s almost guaranteed that if a change is required in banking, insurance or telecommunications, our members of Parliament will always provide them with accommodations to make the transition slowly. The latest of these preferential treatments has been in the Canadian banking industry. It has been six years since the federal government introduced the idea of having an open banking system in Canada. The lack of decisive action from Ottawa on open banking reflects a broader trend of favouring incumbents over innovation. This shortsightedness stifles competition and hinders our ability to attract investment and talent in the fintech sector. It’s a missed opportunity to lead and shape the future of finance, especially when Canadians face enormous economic challenges. Inflation is high, and the cost of living is rising. Today at Day 2️⃣ of The Payments Canada SUMMIT, Executive Director of Payments, Supervision and Oversight at the Bank of Canada (BoC), Ron Morrow gave remarks titled "Laying Bare the Evolution of Payments in Canada." Key takeaways are: 💵 Although digital payments are important, Canadians are still using cash. Ultimately, Canadians will decide if we need a Digital Dollar, which the BoC will facilitate when the time comes. 💫 Payments modernization (#paymod) has come a long way with the revamping of Lynx, Canada's high-value payment system that went live in 2021. The BoC is in the process of the second stage of paymod, which is launching payment service provider (PSP) regulation in 2024. As regulated participants in the payments ecosystem, PSPs will be able to apply to become direct participants in national payments infrastructure. ⏱ Next, the BoC will focus on the Real-Time Rail (RTR), Canada's first real-time payment system. The RTR system should be ready for industry testing in 2026, which will eventually pave the way for real-time national and cross-border payments. 🔀 Following that, the BoC will turn its attention to the aging Automated Clearing Settlement System (ACSS), Canada's batch payment system. We may need to modernize the ACSS or migrate to other systems like the RTR, but the work on this is still in the early stages.
