  • On Trust (Book)

    CyberCurb

An examination about different perspectives on trust in the modern world.

Trust is a vital issue in our society, more so lately as we communicate online with strangers whose premises and motives are unknown to us. More and more tweets, emails and LinkedIn messages come to us from unknown sources for reasons that may be friendly, but may also be hostile. Some are scams; some are cyberattacks on our businesses.

“Once I started to read this book, I did not want to stop. It covers all the points that I could think of and more. It’s a good read for the general public and is essential reading to understand the truth about bitcoin.”

    – Prof. George Athanassakos, Founder & Managing Director of the Ben Graham Centre for Value Investing at the Ivey Business School at Western University

Bitcoin investing has become very popular; stories abound about how much money can be made by investing in bitcoin. It is touted as an “asset”. But is it?

This book tells you what you can buy with bitcoin, which is: not much. It’s mostly used for illegal activities such as ransomware attacks, illicit purchases, tax evasion, and money laundering.

People tell you that its price will hold (like gold) even when the rest of the stock market falls. That too is false. When the market fails, bitcoin falls.

Did you know that bitcoin wastes 0.6% of global electricity production?

Bitcoin is effectively a Ponzi scheme, meaning that those who started buying at the beginning have been able to acquire large amounts bitcoin and sell them for profit. But those who join now are out of luck.

When it all comes crashing down, it will be hard to find anyone to blame because the “whales” (the big fish) are cloaked in secrecy, as is the mysterious founder of bitcoin – an enigma that makes bitcoin seem exciting.

The goal of "Ransomware Risk Mitigation for the Board" is to assist non-technical board members to better understand ransomware-related cybersecurity issues, why the organization should retain cybersecurity professionals, and how to communicate with those professionals.

Cybersecurity falls within the board of directors’ responsibility for overseeing management strategy, and management’s identification and planned response to organization-wide risks.

Board members may also find the Glossary at the back of this book to be a helpful reference guide to various technical cybersecurity-related words and phrases. Using the Glossary, board members can also play "Cybersecurity Board Bingo" with other board members. The rules are explained. While this is a joke, it is actually not a bad idea since it can help board members learn cybersecurity terms… and also help to keep their attention during important, but often long, technical cybersecurity discussions.

Every organization is different and will have different issues and priorities. Cybersecurity is always evolving. A detailed discussion of cybersecurity would be many extremely thick books that would be almost unintelligible to a non-technical person. Cybersecurity is a profession that takes many years of study and hands-on experience. Instead, this book is simple, generic and high-level and intended for a non-technical person.

Traditionally, cyberattacks would steal information such as intellectual property, or personally identifiable information to sell or use later – but not, as ransomware does, shut down the organization’s system. A ransomware cyberattack has an immediate negative impact on system operations, perhaps stopping them completely.

  • An Introduction to Blockchain

    CyberCurb

Blockchain uses a distributed ledger (the “Ledger”) which is a database shared, replicated, and synchronized among the participants of a network (“Participants”) wherein all transactions among the Participants is recorded.

Participants govern and agree by consensus on the updates to the records in the Ledger. There is no central third-party such as a bank. The Ledger has an auditable history of all transactions since each record has a timestamp and a unique cryptographic signature.
