My colleagues gave three excellent presentations of joint papers on MIMO and RIS at the WCNC 2024 conference last week. If you weren't there, I'm offering a brief summary below and links to the papers. 1) In the first paper, we consider channel estimation with large antenna arrays. We cannot rely on channel statistics since it is too hard to acquire that in practice with such large dimensions. Instead, we use the RS-LS estimator to exploit user-independent statistics. We derive a rate expression and maximize it with respect to the pilot resources. These surfaces can either reflect signals in static but unusual ways or be reconfigured based on the current user channels. We demonstrate that a mix of a few reconfigurable and many static surfaces is the preferred solution. We prove that the distortion noise is suppressed similarly to the thermal noise but with a somewhat smaller suppression gain. This proves that a multi-antenna transceiver can use ADCs with lower resolution than a corresponding analog phased array since the combined distortion noise is reduced by the digital processing. Design and simulation of 1 × 2, 1 × 4 and 2 × 8 microstrip patch antenna arrays based on photonic crystals for improved gain performance in THz In a wireless communication system, a microstrip patch antenna is gaining importance as a most powerful technology trend and it is applicable for the development of low-cost, minimal-weight, low-profile and high-performance antenna. This paper presents the design and the analysis of 1 × 2, 1 × 4 and 2 × 8 rectangular microstrip patch antenna (RMPA) arrays based on the photonic crystals for improved gain performance and high radiation characteristics compared to ones that are designed based on the homogeneous substrate in the frequency range of 0.25−0.55 THz. The design of the proposed antenna arrays based on the photonic band gap (PBG) and the homogeneous substrate structures is made by using the designed single-element RMPA as the basic building element, and then, they were fed by the parallel feeding structure. The designed antenna arrays were simulated using CST Microwave Studio software and validated with the aid of Ansoft HFSS simulator. For high radiation characteristics, the proposed antenna arrays resonated around 0.35 THz which is a low loss frequency window in the terahertz band. The main results showed that the designed antenna arrays based on the PBG substrate structure outperform the antenna arrays based on the homogeneous substrate in terms of return loss, bandwidth, gain and directivity. The best directivity was achieved by the 2 × 8 RMPA array of 17.40 dBi, whereas the 1 × 4, 1 × 2 RMPA arrays and single-element RMPA achieved the directivity of 13.54 dBi, 9.87dBi and 7.76 dBi, respectively. In this paper, a compact-size multiple-band planar inverted L-C implantable antenna is proposed. The compact antenna has a size of 20 mm × 12 mm × 2.2 mm and consists of planar inverted C-shaped and L-shaped radiating patches. The designed antenna is employed on the RO3010 substrate (εr = 10.2, tanδ = 0.0023, and thickness = 2 mm). An alumina layer with a thickness of 0.177 mm (εr = 9.4 and tanδ = 0.006) is used as the superstrate. The designed antenna operates at triple-frequency bands with a return loss of −46 dB at 402.5 MHz, −33.55 dB at 2.45 GHz, and −41.4 dB at 2.95 GHz, and provides a size reduction of 51% compared with the conventional dual-band planar inverted F-L implant antenna designed in our previous study.

Alhamdo Lillah our recent research article "AI-Based Wireless Sensor IoT Networks for Energy-Efficient Consumer Electronics Using Stochastic Optimization" has just become available in early access. In this article, an integrated approach has been presented to improve the energy efficiency of Wireless Sensor IoT Networks (WSINs) utilizing machine learning algorithms with stochastic optimization. Recursive Feature Elimination (RFE) is used for the feature selection thus optimizing the input features for various machine learning models. These models are evaluated for their aptness to predict and mitigate energy consumption concerns inside WSINs. I am delighted to annouce that our paper entitled "System Level Performance Assessment of Large-Scale Cell-Free Massive MIMO Orientations With Cooperative Beamforming" has been published in IEEE Access: https://lnkd.in/d7QXqHsn Our paper is the first scientific attempt where realistic radiation patterns are used for the performance evaluation of large-scale cell-free massive MIMO orientations. According to the key outcomes of our work, cooperative beamforming can significantly improve energy efficiency for medium data rate services and significantly lower the number of active radiating elements required to meet minimum QoS standards for high data rate services, thereby reducing both hardware and computational demands. Authored by: Meng Yang; Chi Zhang; Liang Wu; Quan Xue 📝 Volume: Volume: 14, Issue: 1, March 2024 This paper presents a THz radiator array integrating two elements. To improve the phase noise, a feedback network featuring high-frequency selectivity is proposed. Furthermore, the strength of the coupling between the two adjacent oscillators within each element is designed properly, yielding dual-band operation to extend the frequency range. Fabricated in a 65-nm bulk CMOS process, the radiator chip assembled with a crystal slab and a silicon lens achieves output frequency ranging from 299.2 to 314.8 GHz. The measured peak effective isotropically radiated power (EIRP) is 3.9 dBm. ICASSP 2024 Paper: Detector Design for Distributed Multichannel Radar Sensors in Colored Interference Environments In #radar, it is reasonable to consider the interference using a subspace model. For example, the #clutter signal typically appears around the zero Doppler frequency, or a jammer signal may originate from a specific angle. Based on this model we derived the MF detector which contains a matrix. This matrix is the whitened version of the orthogonal projection on the subspace spanned by the subspace-based interference. This interpretation is useful for analyzing and understanding the detection rule. The proposed signal model for colocated multichannel radar shows that the angle resolution only depends on the aperture size, not the phased array or MIMO technique. This shows that contrary to claims made, colocated MIMO radars do not provide an order of magnitude or better angle resolution than thin-full PA radars. Also for RCS (Radar Cross Section) diversity gain for a distributed radar configuration, three cases are explained: First Case: When the target RCS is the same for both the single sensor and multiple distributed radars, the distributed radar configuration, unsurprisingly, exhibits higher SINR and therefore better performance. Second Case: When the target RCS is adjusted to have the same SINR for both the single sensor and multiple distributed radars, and considering RCS Swerling 0, the single sensor shows better detection performance due to its coherent antenna processing gain. Third Case: When the target RCS is adjusted to maintain the same SINR for both the single sensor and multiple distributed radars, and in the scenario of RCS Swerling 1, the distributed radar demonstrates superior detection performance, benefiting from its RCS diversity gain.

I am excited to announce that our research paper, "Ultra-Wide Range Non-contact Surface Profilometry based on Reconfigurable Fiber Interferometry," has been published in #Optics_Letters of The Optical Society (OSA). This work is a significant breakthrough in the field of surface characterization, enabling real-time high-precision surface profiling with an ultrawide detection range of nanometers to millimeters. In this study, we developed a cascaded, non-contact fiber interferometer-based approach that operates by wavelength interrogation. This system allows for the study of various surface types and has a tunable cavity configuration for adjusting sensitivity and range. The proposed system achieves nanoscale profiling over 10–1000 nm with a resolution of 10 nm and microscale mapping over 1–1000 μm with a resolution of 0.2 μm. We successfully utilized this technique to map the features of nanostructured surfaces and estimate the surface roughness of standardized industrial samples.
