Opioids have a robust track record of managing pain. However, the drawbacks associated with their usage have led to an increased focus on non-opioid analgesics (NOAs) as an alternative option for pain relief. While newer NOAs have displayed immense promise in clinical trials, NOAs are nothing new, and have provided pain relief for over a century. In the third installment of our History of Analgesics series, we look at the history of NOAs, from the early days of aspirin to promise shown by more recent analgesics such as Tetrodotoxin (TTX). While opioids remain an effective, necessary part of analgesia, NOAs show that they are not the be-all-end-all of pain relief. While many pain relievers can be seen as triumphs of modern medicine, analgesia is as old as medicine itself. Before the advent of other diagnostic methods, pain was often the primary indicator of illness or injury, and efforts to relief pain were eagerly explored. In the first of our three-part series delving into the history of analgesics, we examine pain relievers from ancient history, when herbal remedies were dominant, side effects were less understood, and medicine and spirituality went hand-in-hand. While many of these ancient analgesics are now seen as ineffective and even dangerous, some are directly responsible for the identification of ingredients still used in pain relievers today. Chemotherapy-induced neuropathic pain (CINP) can be a debilitating condition for people living with cancer. Due to a variety of factors, particularly the complex nature of neuropathic pain, CINP is very difficult to treat. In the absence of any widely prescribed treatment, research into new analgesics has produced promising results. In a clinical trial conducted by WEX Pharmaceuticals, Tetrodotoxin (TTX) was administered to people with CINP to gauge its effectiveness in alleviating the condition. This trial produced encouraging results, as patients reported a reduction in pain without any incidence of major side effects.
