"To enhance the educational experience and quality of life for all undergraduates at Western University"
About us
The University Students' Council (USC) mission is to enhance the educational experience and quality of life for all undergraduates at Western University. To accomplish this mission, the USC functions in three main ways: as an advocacy group, as a service provider and as a student leadership developer. Incorporated in 1965, the USC is a separate corporation from Western University and is managed by elected student executives (President [Chief Executive Officer], Vice President University Affairs; External Affairs; Student Support & Programming; Governance & Finance; and Communications & Public Affairs) with goals and strategic objectives which change annually. The USC functions in three main ways: As an advocacy group: student Council members advocate to the university administration, local groups, political bodies (on all levels of Canadian government) for students interests, and to make sure student voices are being heard. As a service provider: the USC maintains a variety of commercial operations to provide quality service to students. This includes two campus restaurants, a clothing store, and more. The USC also facilitates the student health, dental and bus pass plans. These initiatives, combined with the many events (such as concerts, speakers and festivals) make up most of the organization's budget. As a student leadership developer: the USC offers hundreds of paid and volunteer positions for students at Western. These can include internships with business managers, working closely with the student executive, and volunteering on one of the many programming or service files. The core of the USC will always be student leadership and decision-making.

The University Students' Council at Western University is so fortunate to have such an engaged and supportive alumni network. Back in April, we met with a host of alumni who met with our (then) incoming USC President, Emilie Kalaydjian and outgoing USC President, Sunday Ajak including Cameron Cawston, Hannah Tobias-Murray, Carolyn Hawthorn, Michael Tithecott, Ashley McGuire, Michael Burns, Alfred Apps, Craig Smith, Robert Elder and Dan Moulton. We also started a new tradition of an annual President's dinner which included the last 9 years' of USC Presidents who welcomed Emilie and celebrated a successful year for Sunday. We are eternally grateful to all of our USC Alumni who have made the wonderful organization we all enjoy today a place where "students have the power to change the world".

Now that the summer is here, we have had some time to reflect on the past few months. We would like to look back at some of these incredible accomplishments and opportunities that our full-time and executive teams have engaged in. To start, this past March, Jeff Armour presented at the annual conference for Associations of Colleges and Universities International (ACUI) in a session focused on "An International Perspective on a Career in Unions". Alongside Aidan Grills MBA FRSA FCMI CMgr from University of Leeds Student Union and Paul Clayton MBA from Student Experience Network of Australia and New Zealand. This session was designed to encourage the largely American delegation to think beyond international boundaries for learning and growth. Jeff was able to showcase the University Students' Council at Western University's unique governance structure and student led framework in a captivating manner that had attendees considering a move to Canada.

Vice President of External Affairs at Western University Students Council and President of the Ontario Undergraduate Student Alliance
I am thrilled to share that I have recently been elected as the President of the Ontario Undergraduate Student Alliance (OUSA)🌟 I first learned what OUSA was in my third year and never could have imagined that I would be here. This opportunity is incredibly meaningful and I cannot wait to use this platform to continue advocating for students and ensuring their voices are heard at the provincial level. I am incredibly grateful for the support of my steering committee and for their trust, and can’t wait to work together to make a lasting impact on the student experience. I am also so immensely thankful for the advice that I was able to gather from OUSA’s outgoing steering committee, all of whom provided me with valuable insight into where they would like to see the organization go throughout the next several years. I’m also excited to share that my introduction blog is now available!! In it, I discuss my journey so far, as well as some of my goals for this upcoming year.

University Students' Council at Western University reposted this
I recently completed my term serving on the Board of Directors of the University Students' Council at Western University. The past two years have been nothing short of incredible; filled with invaluable learning experiences in strategic decision-making across legal, financial, governance, human resources, and risk management areas. Initially, I found the scale of the USC's operations daunting as one of Canada’s largest student governments (representing over 35,000 students!), a multi-million dollar operating budget, and over 50 dedicated staff members. However, the training and support from USC staff, COO, and various external experts empowered me to serve our mission of enhancing the educational experience and quality of life for all students at Western. I am deeply thankful to my fellow board members and USC staff whose insights and support were crucial. A heartfelt shout-out to Jeff Armour, Karla Pacheco, CHRL, Jaclyn Higgins, Melissa Kamphuis, Vicki Macauley, and Julie - working with and learning from such talented and passionate individuals has been an honour! I’d also like to extend my gratitude to the USC Executive team, and Council. Your commitment to advocacy, policy creation, and strategic planning is why the USC is able to provide outstanding services, advocacy-related initiatives, events, and experiences to students. I’ll end off this post with the USC's vision statement: "Students have the power to change the world!"
