About us
The Vancouver Fraser Port Authority is responsible for the stewardship of federal port lands in and around Vancouver, British Columbia. Like all Canada Port Authorities, the Vancouver Fraser Port Authority is established by the Government of Canada pursuant to the Canada Marine Act, and accountable to the federal Minister of Transport. Our mandate is to facilitate Canada’s trade objectives, ensuring goods are moved safely, while protecting the environment and considering local communities. The Port of Vancouver is Canada’s largest, supporting close to one in every five dollars of trade in goods that flow through our country and offering the broadest range of cargo-handling options of any port in North America. Positioned on the southwest coast of British Columbia in Canada, the Port of Vancouver extends from Roberts Bank and the Fraser River up to and including Burrard Inlet. The port authority manages over 16,000 hectares of water, more than 1,000 hectares of land and approximately 350 kilometres of shoreline that make up the port.

Today, we hosted a spotlight session with spokesperson Sxwíxwtn Wilson Williams from the Squamish Nation for our employees. His profound insights into the Squamish Nation’s history, governance, people, and lands have greatly enriched our organization’s understanding of local First Nation history and culture. Most of the Squamish Nation community resides on the North Shore of Burrard Inlet and in Squamish along the Squamish River. The Nation's traditions permeate daily life, emphasizing art, language, governance, and sustainability. They prioritize a deep connection to the land and continue to prosper through resilience and innovation. To learn more about the Squamish Nation, please visit their website: https://www.squamish.net/

Did you know? Anchorages are instrumental in keeping goods moving in and out of ports and building resilience into the supply chains people in Canada and beyond rely on. In and around ports, these designated sites provide sheltered areas for cargo ships to undergo mandatory inspections, conduct necessary maintenance work and safely wait to proceed at terminals for loading and offloading operations. Carefully using and managing anchorages is crucial to ensuring cargo movements at the port remain fluid, especially in times of peak traffic or supply chain disruptions. Here’s an overview of how we manage anchorages at the Port of Vancouver to support growing trade and the actions that ship operators are taking to be good neighbours while at anchor 👇🏽

Construction on the Holdom Overpass will begin in the coming months. The overpass is part of a series of road and rail improvements to improve safety and community connections, while increasing transportation efficiency and trade capacity through the port terminals on the North Shore. Ahead of construction, and in partnership with the City of Burnaby and CN, the port authority will hold a third phase of engagement to share concept designs with the public. Stay tuned for more information: https://bit.ly/4cStecV

The Vancouver Fraser Port Authority is working to protect the air, land, and water at the Port of Vancouver. Shore power technology enables ships to shut down their diesel-powered auxiliary engines and plug into land-based electrical power, which helps to significantly reduce air pollutants and greenhouse gas emissions while also reducing engine noise. Shore power is available for cruise ships at the Canada Place cruise ship terminal and for container ships at the Centerm and Deltaport container terminals. Learn more about this technology: bit.ly/3FQTNlL Here is a glimpse of how a ship is connected to shore power ⬇️ Thank you, Holland America Line , for giving us a tour of the Zaandam cruise ship!

Our Oceanic Plaza office recently achieved LEED v4 ID+C: Commercial Interior Gold and Rick Hansen Accessibility certifications. This recognition underscores the port authority's strong commitment to sustainability and accessibility, focusing on energy efficiency and transportation accessibility. Key components of this certification include implementing LED lighting and motion sensors to reduce lighting power by 25%, enhancing indoor environments with natural light and scenic views, and improving indoor air quality through efficient HVAC systems. We worked with Spectrum Ability and SSDG Interiors Inc. to incorporate design features that would improve accessibility and inclusivity, working together to remove barriers to access.
