Welcome to TPS!
This week Toronto Police Service welcomed 155 high school and university students to work alongside our police officers and civilian members to foster crucial connections between our community and law enforcement. This is the 18th year of our Youth in Policing initiative which benefits students and gives our members the opportunity to interact with and learn from youth in our city. It increases our understanding of each other's perspectives to help bridge the gap that sometimes exists between young people and the police. To our YIPI students and all young people entering the workforce, remember that you are society's future leaders, thinkers, and change-makers. Your voice matters - your experiences, fears and hopes are powerful catalysts for change. I look forward to seeing the great work you do this summer and learning about your experiences.

National Indigenous Peoples Day is a day to celebrate the diverse cultures and traditions of First Nations, Inuit, and Métis peoples and reflect on their exceptional resilience in the face of immense challenges. Earlier this week, I had the opportunity to meet with Indigenous communities in Toronto to honour the leadership and contributions of Indigenous Elders. During the gathering, we celebrated with traditional songs and dances and discussed the Service's commitment to continue fostering our relationship and building trust with our city’s Indigenous communities.

We celebrated our Indigenous Peoples at the Native Canadian Centre of Toronto today through traditional song and dance and honoured Indigenous Elders for their contribution to their communities. “Through their tireless efforts, they ensure that the wisdom of their ancestors is not lost, but rather is passed down to future generations,” said Chief Myron Demkiw at the Service’s Aboriginal Peacekeeping Unit National Indigenous People’s Day event on June 17. “Their extraordinary resilience in the face of immense challenges, including the painful legacies of colonialism, the residential school system and intergenerational trauma, is a testament to their strength and spirit.”
