Building the financial feminist economy

About us

The51 is a Financial Feminist™ platform where investors, entrepreneurs and those who aspire to be, come together for democratized access to women-led capital for women-led businesses—to build mutual wealth and social/environmental impact, share knowledge and experiences, and become influential investors, innovators and consumers, and build the financial feminist economy. Founded in Calgary, we are building a new movement to create value, tapping into Canada’s underutilized female wealth and investing it in talented female entrepreneurs and venture funds. Women make up 51 per cent of the population… and women control 30 per cent of the world’s wealth. Forty per cent of us out-earn our male partners and statistically, companies founded by us outperform our male counterparts by 63 per cent. Despite all of this, we make up less than 25 per cent of directors on Canadian boards. Only 15.2 per cent of partners at Canadian venture capital firms are women. As a result, only 10 per cent of Canadian VC investment deals since 2014 went to companies founded by women. How can Canada’s economy reach its true potential if 51 per cent of the population isn’t fully participating? By uniting Canada’s untapped female wealth, we can create a new critical mass of female investors that will drive the next economic wave and make Canada the centre for female-powered capital. With 30 per cent of Alberta’s tech start-ups founded or co-founded by women, our province is well on its way to achieving that critical mass, but our vision is bigger than just Alberta. Female-founded start-ups: By 2030 we want to see the rest of Canada increase the percentage of female-founded start-ups from 13 per cent to Alberta’s 30 per cent. Financing: We want to see Canada increase financing for female-founded start-ups by 30 per cent, year over year.

Great event today at the CPKC Women’s Leadership Summit hosted by Golf Canada. It was definitely empowered women empowering women with an incredible shout out from Shelley Kuipers of The51 challenging folks to invest in women’s sport like the Calgary Wild FC. Raven Jemison of the Kansas City Current sharing its time to be part of a movement transforming into a meteoric rise…and you have to get on the launchpad to be part of it. Was great to be part of an inspiring room that reinforced for me why the Calgary Wild FC matter so much to Calgary. My challenge for everyone reading is to be part of helping to elevate a generation of young women that will go on to amazing things on the pitch, off the pitch and in our great community. Of course THANK you to all those who are all ready helping to make that happen. #sheshootsshesoars

R&R: Rest and Relaxation. Roaming and Rockies. Retreats and Riversides. Roadtrips and Routes. Reflections and Routines. R&R means a few different things for our team in August. Balancing business as usual and busy summer schedules, remember to rest. 💆♀️ Here’s some of the rest and play our team is saying yes to this summer. ☀️ Spending time outside with family and friends, enjoying hikes, some backcountry camping, lots of cold plunging, and lake activities down in Idaho. Currently reading Aquanaut: A Life Beneath The Surface. Rachel Bodor ☀️ Going to her first-ever Calgary Cavalry FC match with her partner, listening to The Light We Carry by Michelle Obama as run motivation, and loving If You Can't Take the Heat by Geraldine DeRuiter, where she blends (no pun intended) how her relationship with food and feminism are so closely intertwined. Emily McBride ☀️ It’s her birthday month! Taking time to relax by the lakes and rivers, and enjoying some camping weekends. Plus, a nostalgic experience at the Avril Lavigne concert. Iva Kubickova ☀️ Getting settled back into a new home and being intentional about setting up new rituals that serve well personally and at work. Two IG accounts to inspire that share how important their consistent routines are for them: @timmchisusano and @jeanelleteves. Also digging into The Ritual Effect by Michael Norton. Courtney Dragani ☀️ Recharging in the great outdoors: hiking, hiking, hiking! Arielle Land ☀️ Celebrating her dog's 13th birthday with a roadtrip to Kelowna, toasting at a couple of weddings, and keeping busy chasing around an almost-one-year-old niece for her first summer. Kelly Tidalgo ☀️ Being off grid, deep in the BC mountains for 4 days hiking with family and friends. Judy Fairburn How are you taking care of yourself this summer? We’d love to hear what you’re getting up to and soak up some of your refreshing ideas. ⬇️

Grateful to Rachel Bartholomew for sharing the challenges she and many women face in femtech and taking action with Hyivy Health and Femtech Canada. Among the critical core message of the article, a few eyeopening callouts: 💰 The global market potential for endometriosis treatments alone is predicted to be between US $180B and $250B ⚖️ Funding for companies treating erectile dysfunction was 6x higher than for those concentrating on endometriosis ⏳ It takes an average of 7 years for women to get an endometriosis diagnosis from when they first notice symptoms 🌍 About 1/3 of women around the world discontinue hormonal birth control in the first year because of either side-effects or health concerns 📉 Ovarian cancer survival rates haven’t improved in decades 📜 It wasn’t until 1993 that the U.S. Congress passed a law mandating the inclusion of women in government-funded clinical trials; in Canada, there are guidelines but no legal requirements to ensure women are part of research design and trials

Resilience we love to hear about. 👏 We've got incredible founders in our portfolio who could tell you all about pivots and lessons learned—like Bunny Ghatrora's pandemic mishap of tracking one of Blume's lost pallets. The takeaway? Learn to take emotion out of unpredictable situations. Things will be okay, even if it feels like they won’t.
