📢 Special Olympics Canada Research Announcement: An independent study led by researchers in the Faculty of Health Sciences at Ontario Tech University has found young adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities participating in Special Olympics programming have a 15% reduced risk of being diagnosed with diabetes than their peers. This is groundbreaking research – the first of its kind within the Special Olympics movement – and clearly demonstrates and validates the positive impact our community based sport programs have on our athletes. Today, Sault Police turned up the heat with a staff chili cook-off to spice up our fundraising efforts for Special Olympics Ontario! The competition was fierce, with Chief Stevenson, Deputy Chief Duguay, Inspector Bolduc, and Sergeant Potter all vying for the top spot with their homemade chili. In the end, it was Sergeant Potter who chili-brated victory, winning by popular vote and cooking up $290 for a fantastic cause! 🌶️🏆 We look forward to seeing everyone tomorrow at the International Bridge Walk / Law Enforcement Torch Run!

Last week Golf Ontario had the privilege of connecting with Special Olympics Ontario to bring awareness to the adaptive golf space. It was a great day of learning and opportunity. No matter who you are, you are welcome on the golf course anytime! Check out some fun pics of my team and I, and the Special O athletes. Who doesn’t love a selfie on every hole! 📸⛳️

    Poet, Educator

This past week, some colleagues and I had the opportunity to take some of our students to the Special Olympics high school provincial games. Special Olympics events are unique in the world of sport. A lot can be said about equity, inclusion, representation, and voice. These are students for whom exclusion is a well known commodity, a cognizance of difference is present, opportunities for inclusion are generally more limited, and voice is almost entirely absent. But the experience of a thing like this flips the script for a brief, special moment in their lives. At the risk of sounding cheesy, or of indulging in cliché, the benefits are in the unquantifiable, in the glimmer in their eyes, the joy in their celebrations, the smile on their faces, the agony in their defeats, and their place in spaces of acceptance. There is some sought after normalcy in ceremony and celebration, in effort and inclusion, and as coaches and educators, upon reflection, maybe there are few things we do that are better than this. #braveintheattempt Special Olympics Special Olympics Ontario
