Really interesting research by my colleague, Joel Medford, on how tightening paywalls impacts unique users and page views. The key takeaway? ➡️ Users begin to decline approximately six months after a paywall is tightened with page views declining about four months after tightening. ⚖️Of course, there are tradeoffs and for most publishers with porous paywalls, tightening can generate more benefit from subscriber starts than maintaining low-value anonymous users. Prior research suggests publishers can break even if they lose five anonymous users to gain one known user. 🧐Keep an eye out for a follow up study this year on the revenue tradeoffs and net impact to bottom line. 🚀Looking to grow subscriptions without impacting page views? How many articles should you offer for free before the paywall? It’s a million dollar question. And one that every publisher with a digital subscriptions model has asked themselves at least once.
