The Katzie, Kwantlen and Semiahmoo (KKS) Nations have identified a parcel of land within their traditional territory to be returned to them to support their shared cultural and economic future. This area of the shared unceded territories is called k'ʷeq'ənəq (Kwek-en-nek) and is now known as Campbell Heights North in the City of Surrey. The site consists of 300 acres of industrial-zoned land that has been declared surplus by the federal government. The request was officially announced today at an event held jointly by the three First Nations in Surrey, near the parcel of land. Today, the Sacred Waters Developments team had the opportunity to attend the Reconciliation in Action: Annual Address with Musqueam, Squamish and Tsleil-Waututh Nations hosted by the Greater Vancouver Board of Trade. We want to express our gratitude to Councillor Jordan Point (xʷməθkʷəy̓əm), Sxwíxwtn Wilson Williams (Sḵwx̱wú7mesh) and Chief Jen Thomas (səlilwətaɬ) for speaking about the incredible work being done by the MST Development Corporation and by each of their Nations to tackle the complex challenges facing their communities and the broader region. The Nations spoke about the challenges they face navigating and integrating into colonial government structures while advancing their development projects. Meanwhile, these same governments are increasingly looking to the Nations to lead developments integral to the region, including projects critical in alleviating regional pressures on housing. We continue to be inspired by how MST and each of the MST Nations challenge prevailing colonial systems to deliver meaningful projects in their shared territories.
