Members of Health Sciences North's North East Specialized Geriatric Centre, a regional program specializing in care for older adults, proudly presented their innovative approach at the 2024 Canadian Geriatrics Society Annual Scientific Meeting in Calgary, Alberta this April. The study showcased the Reactivation Care Unit's success in providing specialized and tailored care for older adults with frailty. By admitting patients directly from the Emergency Department to the RCU, the team achieved remarkable outcomes, including a reduced length of stay, decreased need for inpatient rehabilitation after their hospitalization, and a trend toward fewer patients being designated ALC (who occupy a hospital bed but do not require the intensity of services provided in that care setting). A partnership between the Hamilton Niagara Haldimand Brant Regional Cancer Program based at Hamilton Health Sciences and Indigenous communities paved the way for regular visits by the Mobile Cancer Screening Coach to Six Nations of the Grand River and Mississaugas of the Credit First Nation. Launched in 2013, the program has since expanded and visits communities across the region with low cancer screening rates. Finding and treating people with undiagnosed asthma or chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) improved their health and reduced their health care visits for respiratory symptoms in the year after diagnosis, according to a world-first clinical trial published in the New England Journal of Medicine. This is the first study to prove that treating those people makes a real difference to their health and quality of life. "It's estimated that 70 per cent of people with asthma or COPD go undiagnosed," said study lead Dr. Shawn Aaron, a senior scientist and lung specialist at The Ottawa Hospital and professor at the University of Ottawa.
