ICYMI, we held our Venture Capital Reverse Pitch event last week, and it was a smash hit for entrepreneurs! Here are some key highlights: Saif Hashmi and Sarah McCullough kicked things off with a lively discussion about the BDC Seed Venture Fund and breaking down the stages of startup investment. They shared how BDC, as a Canadian Crown corporation, is all about filling that pesky market gap for early-stage tech companies, helping them grow into sustainable businesses for the long haul. The momentum continued with an insightful panel featuring Saif Hashmi, Sandra Foster from Capstone Ridge Group, and Ty Wirvin, CBV from WestCap, moderated by Joelle Foster from North Forge. They delved into the critical stages of funding—angel investment, venture capital, and private equity—offering startup-specific advice on what investors look for and how to stand out. One powerful takeaway: entrepreneurs will hear "no" 99 times out of 100, but perseverance is key. Don’t take the rejections personally—each "no" brings you closer to a "yes." The grand finale came courtesy of Patrick Musgrave from Osler, Hoskin & Harcourt LLP, who shared highlights from their Deal Points Report. Patrick shared that there's been a big surge in investments in Seed and Series A companies, signalling vibrant health in the Canadian tech ecosystem.
