About us

In times of war and conflict women are seen as victims; our contributions are overlooked and our voices excluded. The Nobel Women’s Initiative is led by Nobel Peace Laureates Jody Williams (USA), Shirin Ebadi (Iran), Rigoberta Menchú Tum (Guatemala), Leymah Gbowee (Liberia), Tawakkol Karman (Yemen), Maria Ressa (Philippines) and Narges Mohammadi (Iran), who all know first hand how crucial women activists are to peacebuilding. Together they use the platform and access that the Nobel Peace Prize provides to amplify the voices and support the work of women peacebuilders around the world. The International Court of Justice (ICJ) has ruled that Israel’s occupation of Palestinian territories is illegal and must end. This landmark ruling calls for reparations for Palestinians and declares Israel’s actions a form of apartheid. While not legally binding, the ruling carries significant moral weight and could influence international policy. Learn more: https://ow.ly/Vbay50SJcqp

Doctors Without Borders (MSF) Southern Africa has released a report detailing the catastrophic impact of the ongoing conflict in Sudan. Civilians are facing indiscriminate violence, and health workers and facilities are under relentless attack. Hospitals have been looted, markets bombed, and homes destroyed, with over 10 million people displaced since April 2023. This report underscores the urgent need for international awareness and action to protect civilians and support humanitarian missions. The human cost of this conflict is immense, and we must not turn a blind eye: https://ow.ly/KWTw50SJc44

As #KamalaHarris announces her run for president, it's crucial to recognize the gendered abuse and disinformation women political candidates around the world – including in places which claim to champion women's rights -  face. In 2020, a study found 336k pieces of abuse & disinformation targeting 13 candidates, with 78% of it aimed at Harris.    Here are some harmful narratives we need to be aware of and combat:  ❌ Sexualized Narratives: Claims that Harris “slept her way to the top” or is sexually promiscuous. These are attempts to undermine her fitness for office. ❌ Transphobic Narratives: False allegations that Harris had been a man named “Kamal Aroush” before transitioning. ❌ Racist/Racialized Narratives: Claims questioning her eligibility for presidency due to her immigrant parents and accusations of not being “black enough” or “Indian enough.”    It's important to label these narratives as attempts to undermine a powerful woman's public service. As feminists, we should challenge anyone opposing a woman's candidacy to engage in substantive debate on her policies and track record, not resort to vile insults.    Gendered disinformation and abuse undermine women's participation in public life and dissuade young women from seeking public office. We need to do better. 👏    Full report can be read here: https://lnkd.in/gBcjBQ6V

In a shocking development, Afghan women and civil society were excluded from the third round of Doha meetings on Afghanistan, held between June 30 and July 2, 2024, at the Taliban's request. This exclusion legitimizes the Taliban's demands and undermines women's rights, which have been systematically eroded since 2021. Since the Taliban's takeover, women and girls have faced severe restrictions, including bans on education, employment, and participation in public life. This exclusion is contrary to international human rights principles and UN resolutions on women, peace, and security. We urge the international community to: ✅ Ensure women's meaningful participation in all engagements with the Taliban. ✅ Prioritize women's human rights in accordance with international obligations. ✅ Urge the Taliban to allow women's participation in public life and decision-making. ✅ Provide gender-responsive humanitarian aid to all Afghans in need. ✅ Maintain transparency and inclusion in future engagements. In one of the most horrifying assaults in months, at least 31 lives have been lost, and 112 wounded in Ukraine due to Russian missile attacks. Among the targets was Kyiv’s main children’s hospital. Make no mistake- bombing hospitals is a war crime and an affront to humanity! Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has vowed a powerful response to this egregious aggression. Despite the Ukrainian air force's valiant efforts, downing 30 out of 38 Russia-launched missiles, including the hypersonic Kinzhal, the impact is devastating. The UN Security Council is set to meet today to address these horrific strikes. However, the Council is currently chaired by the aggressor – Russia – where it also holds a veto, making the principal body responsible for maintaining peace completely impotent in this situation.
