As Collision wraps up its final year in Toronto, we want to take a walk down memory lane and reflect on our evolution over the past 5 years. From an alpha stage startup at Collision’s inaugural year in Toronto in 2019, we were honoured to exhibit as the sole growth stage startup within the pharmacy space this year! We were one of only 7 growth stage startups within the healthtech and wellness industry and we really enjoyed mingling with visitors interested in our work within the ecosystem. Now that MedMe has grown to over 50 employees, we had the privilege of bringing our summer students Sayna Saqafi Andrew Au Angela Xu and our newly joined pharmacist Deanna Lo to experience the tech space for the first time, learn from industry leaders, and connect with peers. This is one of the reasons why we started MedMe Health (YC W21) – to help pharmacies alleviate the burden on other healthcare facilities. The results from Nova Scotia are remarkable – nearly a 10% drop in emergency room visits for less urgent conditions. Although it's difficult to pinpoint the exact impact of each initiative, we know the pharmacy-led clinic pilot program with 26 pharmacies played a significant role. Many of these pharmacies are using MedMe's clinical services platform, which aligns perfectly with our vision of transforming pharmacies into community healthcare hubs. At MedMe, our mission is to expand the capacity of the healthcare system by enabling pharmacies to provide accessible, patient-centric health services. Our north star metric, the number of Paid Healthcare Services/Interactions facilitated by MedMe, tracks the meaningful contributions of our platform to the broader healthcare system. We had an incredible time at the Northwest Pharmacy Convention 2024! Some key learnings and discussions from the conference as the MedMe Health (YC W21) team spent a few enlightening days in Coeur d’Alene, Idaho:: 🩺 Standard of Care Model for Autonomous Prescribing Jennifer Adams highlighted the continuum of pharmacist prescribing authority, from most restrictive to least restrictive across all the states, starting from: 1) Collaborative Prescribing: Patient-Specific CPAs 2) Collaborative Prescribing: Population-Specific CPAs 3) Autonomous Prescribing: Government Protocols 4) Autonomous Prescribing: Standard of Care States like Idaho on the Standard of Care model are leading the charge with the more standard and sustainable way for pharmacists to prescribe, rather than more restrictive and highly-specific models that make it difficult for even patients to know what pharmacists can and cannot do. 🌐 Diverse Approaches to Clinical Services We observed a wide range of progress among pharmacies in their clinical services journey - from those just beginning to implement clinical services to those with fully established systems, multiple consultation rooms, and dedicated clinical staff such as Alexandra (Sasha) Heyneman, PharmD, MS, ANP and Scott Herzog doing services like compounding, prescribing, PrEP, Travel, Hormone Therapy, etc. 💊 Emergence of Cash Pay Pharmacies Innovative models like cash pay pharmacies, where patients pay a fixed monthly fee for unlimited healthcare access, are gaining traction. There was an interesting case we heard where a pharmacy was able to retain 50% of their patients after transitioning Caremark patients to this model. This approach is particularly valuable for patients caught between Medicare and Medicaid or those with high deductibles and copays, making out-of-pocket payments more affordable. Moving to Toronto a year ago, I was captivated by the city's relentless energy and spirit, and yesterday, at 'Innovate Within Walls', was no exception. We were privileged to hear from some incredible speakers whose stories and insights exemplified the very essence of ambition and innovation. Andrew Nathaniel F. with his compelling breakdown of why and how to foster innovation regardless of the medium. Victor Li shared his transformative journey from consulting to leading his own innovation consultancy, demonstrating how onova has paved the path for major corporations to innovate and support intrapreneurial endeavours. Michael Cheong, Francois Gouelo, Purya Sarmadi, Pat Sathiensamrit highlighted their own personal success stories, showcasing unique paths of innovation and impact in their fields.
