MDRU is an industry-funded research group established at The University of British Columbia to provide mineral exploration research, education, and professional training to the industry. We have expertise in gold deposits, porphyry copper systems, regional metallogeny, and the development of exploration tools, technologies and strategies. We have research initiatives in the fields of geometallurgy, exploration geochemistry, tailings and CO2 mineralization. We are global, with projects around the world and a diversity of industry partners and collaborators. We accomplish research and training objectives with a team of experienced researchers, graduate students and contributing UBC faculty members. MDRU is the home of the Exploration Geochemistry Initiative (EGI), and collaborates broadly across UBC including with BRIMM (Bradshaw Research Institute in Minerals and Mining), ICaRN (International Caving Research Network) and the UBC Geophysical Inversion Facility (GIF). High-grade electrum (Au-Ag)-bearing veins from Zone 37 of the Cretaceous age Dvoinoye Deposit in northeastern Russia, which was previously mined by Kinross Gold. Photos are from an underground crosscut averaging approximately 40 g/t Au over the width of the 20 m width of the vein at this location, but nearly all the gold in this wide vein here is in a handful of narrow, ginguro banded quartz-adularia stages near the vein contacts grading >500 g/t Au, as shown in upper left, with most of the vein quartz otherwise composed of low grade, white weakly colloform crustiform banded chalcedonic quartz lacking adularia. The hand sample images show the greenish-grey bands of electrum (only part of that is pyrite – its mainly electrum!) that comprise much of the darker bands and which contain minor pyrite, galena, chalcopyrite and sulphosalts, and which also form cockade textures (upper right). The electrum-rich bands grow onto, or are overgrown by white adularia which forms coarse, tabular radiating crustiform bands, and which provide evidence of vigorous boiling associated with Au deposition (e.g. see Dong and Gregg Morrison, 1995: Mineralium Deposita). These samples illustrate the common association between adularia and high-grade precious metal stages in low sulphidation epithermal vein deposits that form within a limited vertical range beneath the paleowater table along active faults. Pre-concentration processes with colloidal gold may be responsible for such high-grade bands, since these cannot be explained by gold solubility alone. Adularia with chalcedonic, cryptocrystalline quartz often forms a better indication of boiling conditions at ore levels than the more commonly touted bladed quartz after calcite lattice textures, the latter which in many deposits may be either absent or have much broader spatial or temporal range than the distribution of the precious metal mineralization in the deposit. Such relationships and the linked structural and geochemical evolution of ore systems will be the addressed in the upcoming short course by Nick Oliver, myself and Shaun Barker at MDRU between Nov. 18 and 20 in Vancouver, link is in the comments below.

I’m excited to share a paper stemming from my PhD project that was published in The Canadian Journal of Mineralogy and Petrology. The paper is titled “In Situ Sulfur Isotope Geochemistry Using Secondary Ion Mass Spectrometry of Sulfides in the ABM Replacement-Style Volcanogenic Massive Sulfide Deposit, Finlayson Lake District, Yukon, Canada“, and covers the sulfur isotope characteristics of the massive sulfide mineral assemblages at the ABM VMS deposit in the Finlayson Lake district, Yukon.
